BOOK ABOUT, WHITE HORSES
AND OTHER THINGS..
Tiger-shooting, tropical diseases, Robert Burns. ethnology, Scotch landscapes and yarns, white horens and vitamines-these are some of the subjects of the contents of From Burn to Bottle,' issued by Messrs. Mackie and Company, distillers of the White Horse brand of Scotch whisky. Naturally the book tells all there is to say about whisky; its history, how it is manufactured, analysed and blend- ed, and the difference between Scotch and the other varieties.
The origin of the name White Horse provides an interesting chapter in itself, and will come as news to most devotees of the brand. It is a memory of an old coaching inn in the / Canongate, Edinburgh, which was noted for its whisky as far back as 1740. As a symbol a white horog is very general ainong Northern Eur opean races. It was an emblem of Saxondom. Hengist and Horan we e mounted on white hores, the White Horse in Berkshire is a memento of Alfred the Great's victory over the Danes; and the white horse figures in the arms of a Hanoverian Order of which several of the British Royal Family are members, d
A detailed description of the modern; complex and scientific process of distillation is very interesting but not more so than the chapto a on smuggling, local customs and old Scotch families. A light vein is in- troduced, with some storica in the broadest vernacular, by Sir Peter. J. Mackie, and the reproduction of a shepherd's diary which are very agasing, strongly flavoured as they are with Scotch humour and whisky.
