HOW FILM HIREES ARE SAID TO BE DISCIPLINED.

An interesting light was thrown upon things that happen in the kinematograph industry during the hearing of an action at Manchester County Court.

It was alleged that if a hirer of films did not abide by the rules of the Kinema Renters' Society he would not be supplied with films, and he could be brought before the committee and fined.

The Ideal Films, Ltd., sued Thomas Baker, of Oldham-street, Manchester, for £70 in respect of seven films hired to him while he was tunning the New Empire Theatre, and Palace of Varieties at Middleton.

For the plaintiffs, Mr. Rycroft enid that after entering into the contract to take the films from the plaintiffs the defendant sold the theatre at Middleton to a company, and the defence was that the company, when buying, agreed to take over all films that the defendant had contracted. for,

The Manchester manager of the Ideal Film company, Alton Caplan, was called, and said he never looked to the new company for payment of the $70 in the event of the defendant not paying!

Mr. Laski, who appeared, for the defendant, asked as to the attitude of the Kinema Renters' Society towards non-conforming members.

The Judge asked what the society

Was.

Mr. Jackson, who appeared for the present owners of the theatre, replied that it was the strongest trade pro- tection society in the world,

It has headquarters in London and a branch in Manchester, and if a thfrer of films does not carry out the Items of his contract; org does, not

not agree that it is a boycott, We can please ourselves."

Mr. Laski: Have you been advised by the Kinema Renters' Society not to deal with this theatre at Middleton! Witness: Yes, in the sense. I have mentioned, spot

Mr. Jackson: If anyone who hires films does anything which the society does not like is not a boycott brought into play ?--I don't agree with that word boycott.

ja time with a request that, if the business does not interest them, they will return the catalogue. It may also occur that a catalogue gets mis- laid when going the rounds in this way.

Later, the witness said the Kinema Renters' Society advised him not to have anything to do with the new company herause they would not take over Baker's contracts. He had not booked a film with the company since the ban.

a

Judge Meilor: They cannot get Charlie Chaplin film then? (Laughter.)

The Witness: No.

Mr. Jackson: Has not a certain company of film renters just been fined £900 by the Kinema Rentere Society for a breach of the rules? I don't know.

the

The next witness, Frank Collinson, Manchester manager of the Kinema Renters' Society, denied that they banned the theatre, but he admitted that when he was seen by the theatre manager the boycott was mentioned.

"THE BOYCOTT."

Mr. Jackson Did they ask you to use your influence to get that boycott removed? —Yes.

Do you now say there was no boycott-The Society did not put on a boycott,

Who put it on The members, Mr. Baker, the defendant, sa'd when bide by the rules which we adopted he old the theatre he had booked up by this very powerful body observed £5,000 worth of films, 23 counsel, the society not only won't Walter Randle Kay, maungr of supply the films for which they have the theatre, said the theatre was contracted with the lirer, but they won't supply any now filma "

He added that the hiter could be before the committee of the and heavily fined.

Mr. Fox, therefore suggests that United Kingdom manufacturers wher forwarding him enquiries for agencies, more particularly in the case of engineering specialities, should send at least six copies of their catalogue or illustrations for distribution anionget local firms in China.

Attention has recently been drawn by the Commercial Counsellor to the desirability of quoting prices in such publications even if they are only approximate.

While United Kingdom manufac turers and traders may, if they wish, communicate directly with His Majesty'e Commercial Diplomatic and Consular Officers abroad in regard to any particular item of commercial intelligence upon which they may require information it is desirable that such enquiries should in the first instance be directed to the Departe ment of Overseas Trade in order to avoid delay in cases in which the : Department is already in possession

of the required information.
