STEALING LIGHTNING.

NOVEMBER 16, 1921.

Two Chinese were yesterday after- noon charged before Magistrate Lindsell, with having feloniously abstracted and consumed Elcotricity the property of the China Light and Power Company.

Mr. M. H. Turner prosecuted for the Company, and Mr. G. G. N. Tinson appeared for the first accused,

According to the prosecution, the accused lived at No. 64, Chathem Road which Was nut supplied with electric current by the Company: They wete alleged to have topped the main wires sup. plying electricity to the road, which ran under the verandahs if the houses, and lit two cubicles with the current thus abstracted. A Chinese detective who was aware that No. 61 was not supplied, saw a bright light in the house and informed the

Company. Mr. Nicholls, Main Superin- tendent, and a pulice sergeant paid a surprise visit to the house and found two cubicles on the first floor were electrically lit.

Mr. R. E. Nicholls said that from examination of the wires in the cubicles, it was evident that they ware not supplied by the Company, There was no meter or fuas in the house and the wires were connected wtih the main each night. Any per- son could connect the wires if they had seen it done once,

Mr. Tinson denied any complicity on the part of his client who was only

a sub-tenant of the other accused, The latter was arrested in the house, while his client was arrested at the China Light and Power Station where: .he was employed as a fireman. The lights were there when his client rented the rubicle. The other accused admitted the charge and accepted responsibility, and therefore his client was entitled to a discharge.
