Englishman's £2,500 a Minute.

NOVEMBER

Sir Edwin John, an Engli-hman well-known in India where he made a huge fortune, had a remarkable run of luck at the gambling tables at Deauville on August 13. He won a cool 700,000 fes. at baccarat in just under six minutes Sir Edwin, who had been at Deauville or a little over ten days, had been playing very heavily and his record win

made at the "big talle." Entering the Casino shortly after dinner Sir Edwin took over the bank for 50,000 francs and with one af those as of good luck which all gamblers await, he managed to pass four times in succession. He doubled the bank on each occasion. On the Sfth pass only 100,000 francs was staked against him. This he lost leaving his winnings at 700,000 | fraces. This amounts at about £15.00 at present rates of exchange. Sir Edwin won at the rate of about £20 minute and as he left the Casino he was the object of many curious plances not unmixed with

envy.

Census of Ceylon.

The revised fures give the tutai population of Ceylon. as at the March census, as 4,498.000 (excluding mili- tary and shipping) and 1,502,000) in- chiding then. If the military and the shipping are excluded as being ol a Huctuating character, this figure shows an increase of about 9.5 per cent, over the 1911 totals, which, with the exception of the decade 1801-1891. is the smallest since the fiat decennial i census was taken in 1871. The re

spetive rates are the following: 1871-1881. 15 per cent.. 1891-1891, 9 per ceút: 1891-1901, 18.6 per cent.:| 1901-1911. 15.5 per cent.: 1911-1921. 9.5 per cent. The low rate in 1911- 1921 is to be ascribed to the influenza pandemic, and the war conditions, including shortage of rice, and general trade depression. The low rate of 1881-1891 waz due to the failure of! coffee, and the higher rates in the ntler dades to the cofee boom in 1871-1881; to the development of tes in 1891-1901; and the rubber boom in 1:414911.
