AND THE JERGEANT.
Sergt Carey, of the Water Police;. Ead an exciting story to tell when a charge of obstructing the police in the execution of their duty, was preferred against a fuherman and a sarpan woman before magistrate "Ofme yesterday afteracon
The Sergeant related that on the night of October 24, he was patrolling the barbour in a police lauttḥ and when passing the Causeway shelter, he saw some sampaus Iving there without lights. He got inta dinghy and went amongst them. In the woman's boat he found a heavy box. Defendant banded the key to another woman who opened the dor for hm. As soon as the lid was lifted the female defendant made a grab at something and the Sergt. grabbed also. It was hard ad heavy and the second woman joineri in the struggle for the possession of the parcel. The next moment the Sergt. was attacked from behin i by the male defendant who came from: the text boat and they both feli through the awning into the man's boat. The police coxswain came to the Sergt's assistance and the boat people submitted, but the mysterious parcal had vanished into the water.
Me A. E. Hall who defended. suggested that it was instinct which
made the Sergt. search that particular boat and the latter said he could put
it down to that if he liked.
