The sole suficing recom- mendation of the plain from which the vast mass of Versailles now rises was that it possessed no natural charms and no natural conveniences. There, as the French historian re- marked. "he created round himself a little aniverse in which he was the one necessary being, and almost the only being who was mal." Even water was lacking, and only after much difficulty and one, colossal failure could his ex- gineers provide a supply. But as everyone who has axisted on a Sun- day afternoon at the display of the Versailles waterworks will handsomely admit, there was plenty of it in the end. Among the innumerable, pools, lakes, and canals which gleam amid the geometrical gardening is one call- ed the Bassin des Pages, in which the boys of the Court of Le Roi Soleil were taught to swim. It is still a swimming bath, open alike to civilians and the soldiers of the neighbouring

FISH THAT BLUSH
QUEER TROPICAL SPECIES IN LONDON.
That a fish can blush seeds a ridiculous asserit, but it is never- theless true.
A number of Indian specimens-- suffering from the name of Barbus pyrthopterus obliged me writes a correspondent in the Daily Chronicle of August 2, by doing so, the other day, at the establishment of Mr. B. T. Child, naturalist, of Pentonville-road, King's-cross; his they had just arrived.
It was not because of bashfulness, suger or shame, but merely excite- ment aroused by the introduction of some wriggling bloodwurms into their tank.
Normally the little fish, which do not exceed three inches and are some- what like tiny bream in shape, are olive green on the back, with lastrous silvery sides.
Immediately the food was given them. however, first one and then another assumed a ruddy hue, until the whole shoal glowed like so many ruby lamps.
The male of a pretty two-inch handed species, known as Haplochilus chaperi, from W. Aftics also gave an exhibition of his powers in this direction, though these were restrict- ed to his nose.
When meal-time comes round, this becomes as radiantly ruddy as that of any old-time comedian.
2,000 LIVES IN DANGER.
BIG LINER SAVED BY PRESENCE OF MIND.
saw #
When about a mile out from Algiers the captain of the coastal steamer "Notre Dame d'Affrique" large floating mine some distance shead. At that moment the Italian liner "Presidente Wilson" (12 367 tons), with 2,000 passengers on board, was leaving port, and steaming in the direction of the mine.
The Notre Dame d'Afrique" was promptly manœuvred round to a position: between the mine and the "Presidente Wilson," says the Central News, and the latter was obliged to deviste from her course. The pas sengers were bot aware of the preSRDCE of danger until they were some miles
ont at sea.
A small party from the coastal steamer succeeded later in securing the mine, and the part authorities were communicated with.

barracks. The other day a party, with sergeant and subaltern com- plete, were marched down to the Basain, and enjoying themselves in the water, when the sergeant cried out to his officer that there were croco- diles. The subaltern found a natural difficulty in taking bim seriously. Bat. the sergeant's alarm was as real as Captain Hook's, and so was the crocodile. More so, indeed, for there were eight. It is understood that minor tactics, as taught in the Franch army, do not at present include any recipe for the treatment of eight cro- codiles by a platoon in puris natur- alibus. The platoon was therefore withdrawn from what we may be allowed to call its dangerously ex posed position. The problem was then referred
to the intelligence department. It could not be sup posed, marvellous as were the creative efforts of Louis XIV., and strange as some of the things in the gardens of Versailles are, that the eight crocodiles were a legacy from him. Nor was it easy to associate them with Louis XV., whose companies of the lower animals were little dogs, or Marie Antoinette, whose tasted were for cows and poultry. Intelligence at length reported that a cinema- tographer, very justly called enter- prising had at great expense brought eight fine crocodiles there for the purposes of a film."We cannot sufficiently admire his discretion in failing to mention the fact, and we hope he was there when the platoon discovered what sort of mixed bath- ing they were enjoying. He will never : get a better film.. We welcome the convincing demonstration that when the "movies" want to make our flesh creep they let nothing stand in the way of realian. Yet we hope that this zeal for truth may be checked. We have not all the qualifications of film heroes, and we feel that if croco- diles are to be on our bathing beaches this summer our holidays will be less restful than we could wish.
