The Grand Hotel at Villars, in the Rhone Valley, well known to British fourists, was totally destroyed by fire in the morning.
The fire started on the roof and quickly spread to lower floors. Two hundred guests, including many En- glish people, fed into the grounds in their night clothes. They were able to save the best part of their jewels and valuables, but several families lost all their belongings.
