SAVING MEASURE,
PLUMAGE BELL PASSED AFTER 14 YEARS.
The Plumage Bill, which prohibits the importation into the United Kingdom of plumage. excepting ostrich plumes and eiderdown, passed the third reading in the House of Commons. The Bill aims at protect ing beautiful birds, such as the humming birds, the esret, and the birds of paradise from toniere and extinction.
The Bill which has been approved by the House of Commons is the out- come of a 14-years campaign in Parliament against the extinction by cruel and revolting methods of beautiful feathered creatures which perform a valuable service to man in the destruction of insect pests. In many cases the plumage was tom from the birds during the breeding
season.
In 1907 Lord Avebury's Plumage Bil was introduced in the House of Lords. A series of Bills on the same lines has since been before Parliament, but each time, until thú year, the opposition of the interested minority has prevailed against the expressed wishes of the bulk of the people's representatives,
