NEW METHOD OF TREATING WAR DISFIGUREMENT.
One of the siddest aftermaths of war l'the number of ex fighting men who show facial disfigurement that, in the absence of scientific greatment, wist remain for life.
At the Savoy Hotel on June 21 a Daily Chronicle representative met a | surgeon who claimstohave perfected a
form of plastic surgery that will obli«' terate disfigurement or reduce it to infinitesimal proportions.
Dr. Le Roy Stoddart, of New York, has been studying this branch of ser-) rical science for 12 years. The war brought in its train a demand for re- medial surgery of this description, with opportunity for testing and per- fecting theory and practice.

Dr. Stoddart is returning a visit paid him by French surgeons interest- el in the matter, and brings with him a film showing treatment of cases of disfigurement.
Some of the least technical por- tions of the film he threw on a screen, and in the case of a young American soldier, whose face had been scarred by sharpnel splinters, the operation bad resulted satisfactorily. Beyond faint lines that where scarcely discernible, - nothing - remained of disfigurernent.
"I feel said, Dr. Stoddart, "that there is a psychology in the matter that is of first importance. Meg and women carrying facial disfigurement can never be at their best either in business or social life. Conscious of physical defect their mind refuses to concentrate to its full extent.
A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION. ~"I have treated com lawyer of in- ternational reputation, whose eyelid was 80 heavily pendulous that a jury would scarcely think he was zwake.* It was only with constant effort that he could keep his upper eyelid from drooping even at the most critical stages of his work. After the defect had been remedied one could scarcely believe it was the same man.
"For many years there was an almost unconquerable profesional and popular objection to the practice. But when war came the necessity for it became recognised, and treate ment is increasingly in request.
Dr. Stoddart claims that danger of resultant scar after treatment bad been
entirely removed by his methods.

A woman charged at a New York: police-court with burglary pleaded that “ My glands made me do it.”
Her doctor testified that she was suffering from "bypothyroidism.” This disease, he explained, is an affection of the thyroid gland, causing a lack of certain oils that secrete in the glands of the larynx, and is sometimes responsible for criminal [tendencies.
The magistrate said it was not clear to him how an affection of the gland could have any connection with ļa person's ability to differentiate right from wrong but doubtless the medical | fraternity knew best. He released the woman under recognisances to enable her to undergo treatment.
