The Probibition Commissioner of the State of Ohio in his -annual report sava that at a conservative estimate 50,000 stills are at work in the Stale as comatred with 100 two years ago before Prohibition.
There were then, he says, about 200 breweries in Ohio: now the number probably runs inte hundreds of thousands. The police of the City of Columbus estimate that one family out of every 4 brews its own beer. Many women are brewing for their own family and friends as well
Apricots, raisins, and other fruits capable of producing intoxicating cordials are dealt with in huge quan- tities in grocers' shops, and, in some communities, every home contains an apparatus for making distilled or fermented liquors.
A despatch from Newport, Rhode Island, to the New York Tribune siates that letters received from Mr. James Van Alen, former American Ambassador to Italy, announce his intention to renounce American citizenship and become a citizen of France.
When Prohibition came into force Mr. Van Alen declared that he would - leave the United States if Prohibition did not. He has now made good his threat.
Mr. Van Alen has bought the late Mr James Gordon Bennett's chateau at Cannes. He gold his New York home in December 1919 and went to Hire in England.”)
