"SAVAGE SENTENCES."
NINETEEN YEARS IN JAIL.
A woman of S1, who pleaded guilty at London Sessions of stealing from a shop, caused strong comments
to
be made by the Chairman, Sir Robert Wallace. There were many convictions against the woman, dating from 1971. In 1872 she was sentenced to seven years' penal ser vitude. In all she IN spent 19 years in jail.
Mr. Arthur Bryan for the defence said: "That it should have been possible for a young woman of 34 to be sentenced to seven years' pensi servitude for her second offence, the , theft of Handel possibly worth one shilling and sixpence, seems incredi ble. How could she be honest after Įthat? If she is a criminal. 1 sav it is the fault of the State which allowed these savage sentences."

Sir Robert Wallace said: going to send this list of convictions to the Home Office, because this sort of offence should really be made known, to see how many people in The country have been ruined by a system which I had hoped had pass- jed away but which some people seem
to want restored."
