REFERENDUM VOTES IN CANADA AND AUSTRALIA POSSIBLE-

+ LONDON, Jane 29,

It is stated on good authority that probably the question of renewal of the Anglo-Japanese Treaty will be postponed for several months during which the existing treaty will automatically continue in order to enable Messrs. Hughes and Meighen to return home, to consult their colleagues and if necessary obtain a referendum vote of their own people upholding er sejecting the proposals which were to be settled by the Imperial Conference.

In connection with the above Reuter learns from an authoritative Bout that British and Japaces: discussions are progressing with a view o leaving sufficient time adequately to discuss the question of renewal of

e Alliance but up to the present no decision has been reached.

LATER.

It is expected that the Imperial Conference will conclude discussion of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance to-morrow. Mesars Meighan, Hughes, Smuts, Massey, and Maharzo Cuteh spoke to-day,

LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION.

DINNER TO DOMINIONS REPRESENTATIVES.

LONDON, June 30.

Viscount Grey presided at a dinner given by the League of Nations Union in honour of the Dominions representatives. There was a large - gathering of notables including representatives of all the nations adhering to the League. Viscount Grey, proposing the League, declared that the "British Empire to-day represented the disappearance of the old idea of central authority and subordination and the new idea of voluntary co- operaties based an confidence and equal authority. Similarly, the League represented the disappearance of something old and the embodiment of the new spirit. Referring to disarmament, Viscount Grey urged negotia tions with the United States not with a view to making a bargain but for the purpose of doing something to diminish world competition. General Sqauts, responding, believed that the idea on which the League was based would eventually work the greatest revolution the world bad ever seen. The Indian delegate, Mr. Cutch declared that India appreciated her new daties and responsibilities. As one of the links of the smaller League of Nations forming the British Empire India wished nothing better than success for the greater League.

"THE MARRIAGE MARKET

From the evidence and explanatory statements by counsel it appeared [ that the defendants entered into a contract for the purchase of 20 dozen muslin singlèts ind. 60. doren stock- ings from the plaintiffs. The goods were duly delivered but payment was refused on the ground, that they were not up to sample. It was agreed by the plaintiffs that the goods were inferior to the alleged samples produced by the defendant il Court but it was contended) that those were not the simples produced to the defendants when the contract w23 arranged but were of a guperior quality. Witnesses explained to the FEL, July 1st jodge that the singlets sold to the defendant and the sample given by the plaintiffs were of the ping ling variety which were, it appeared, un- fashionable in Hongkong and difficult : to dispose of. The stockings salá were only half as long as those pro- | duced in court by the defendants.

The plaintiffs' case had not been concluded when this edition went to] press.
