in the House Commons, during the discussion of the Post Office estim- ates, Mr. F. G. Kellaway, the Postmaster-General, antonseed that the Gov. ernment had decided to drop the proposed increase in charges for newspapers and printed matter for despatch abroad. He said that the loss on the carriage of inland printed papers and postcards was £2,400,000, and it was estimated that the increased rates in both classes. would produce an additional £2,000,000, and the whole of the increased charges £2,500,000. The remaining £1,000,000 of the deficit of £3,500,000 would be provided by the abolition of the Sunday post.

There has been growing opposition to the increased postal charges for newspapers and printed matter for despatch abroad. In this connection there have been several deputations. Mr. F. G. Kellaway, replying to a deputation representing the newspaper proprietors-and the Empire Press Unian, which laid stress on the injurious effects of the proposed increases on British overseas trade and British commercial propaganda abroad, pro- mised sympathetic corsideration but pointed out that it was bis duty to make the •Post
Office self-supporting. The Council the Empire Press Union unanimously passed
resolution requesting the withdrawal of the proposal to increase the charges for printed matter from the United Kingdom to the Dominious. A formid- abie protest was forwarded to the Premier on behalf of, among others, the Colonial Institute, the Empire League, the Overseas Club, the Patriotic League, and the Royal Society of Literature, expressing dismay at the enhanced rates which they declared must be disastrous to the interests of the Empire, placing a barrier against înter-imperial exchange of knowledge. and asking the Premier to receive a deputation.
