COTTON INDUSTRY OUTLOOK.

FUTURE FACED WITH PERFECT CONFIDENCE."

LONDON, June 3, Presiding at a meeting of a cotton mill company in Manchester, Sir Be Edward Mackay Edgar optimistically viewed, the cotton industry. painted out that the world to-day was shorter than ever of cotton goods. "was merely a question of waiting till the universal demand at present fresated by a variety of adverse bat temporary conditions, became again effective. In view of the fact that no cotton mils could be bought at kupck out prices, that India and Japan had raised working hours nearer the Lancastig level, that Germany was no longer able to export cotton goods and that the perial of inflated prices and dear money was coming to an end, the future could be faced with perfect confidence.

RUBBER EXHIBITION.

MANY TROPICAL PRODUCTS REPRESENTED.

LONDON, June 3.

The international exhibition of rubber and other tropical products in the Agricultural Hall which opened to-day is interesting not only by reason of the wide range of products but also because of the manifold articles. manufactured from them. Messrs. Lever Brothers' stall very impressively displays articles the firm manufactures together with raw products from its Ajca agencies. The Gold Coast has a striking and artistic exhibit. Malaya and Ceylon are worthily represented. A noteworthy feature is an exhibit of rubber linoleum which, according to Sir Ernest Birch, is capable of absorbing 30,000 tons of raw rubber anually.

The Netherlands section is sub-divided into Sumatra, Java, and East Java stands, and the famous Netherlands Government Rubber institute at! Delft splendidly displays its various mechanical and other testing methods, The whole of the Sumairan and Japanese rubber industry is illustrated by maps, photographs, soils, samples of crude rubber, tools, and seeds. A sub-section is allotted to the guttapercha cultivation carried on at the Netherlands India Government plantations in Java. Palm oil, tea, cocoa and coffee are also included.

THE DECORATIONS.

A decorative scheme that had been conceived in excellent taste and most effectively. carried out made Government House and its grounds sight worth seeing last night. The half along which the guests approached to the ballroom was hung, about with graceful. festoons of evergreens studded with fairy lamps which, softly shaded, diffused a warm red glow. Large floral bouquets were suspended from the ballroom ceiling and the supper rooms had been tastefully decorated with lotus blos

5030.

Rows of Chinese lanterns hung along the verandahs and clusters of Fairy lights set amongst the trees Furnished a picturesque bordering for a brilliant picture. And high. above it all a huge coruscant G.R... with a blazing cornet between the letters, flashed out towards the har hour the significance of the display.

The decorative, scheme was the work of Mr. D. Burlingham, AD.C. and was carried out under the general supervision of Mr. IL P. Lowick of the P.W.D. Messrs. B. J. Stevenson and A. E. Clarke, of the P.W.D., | were directly responsible for the whole of the illuminations except the G.R." which was arranged by the Hongkong Electric Company. Mr. H. Green, Superintendent of the Botanical and Forestry Department had charge of the floral decorations.
