Messrs. James F. Hutton & Co. Ltd, Manchester, reported on March 23:
A steadier tone" has again been evident in the cotton markets, and the slight upward tendency netice Cable since the beginning of this month has been more pronounced. Prices have gained all round with Dear positions especially ärmer, and there is little doubt that the improve ment is the result of increased enquiry from the trade generally and better sales. These have cer tainly not been very heavy, but more hopeful reports from textile centres are responsible for a much less pessimistic feeling. Egyptian prices have risea sharply owing to the increase of buying. The final ginning report for the American crop gives a total of 13,197,000 bales apart from inters, against 11,326,000 the previous season and 11,906,000 in 1918-19 which is much as anticipated. The consumption of cote ton by the United States for February again shews an increase, amounting to 395,000 bales against 355,000 in January. There has bees a welcome improvement in some sections of the yarn and Hoth markets. Makers of dhooties and light goods for India are chiefly benefited, but there has-also- been more business done generally and enquiries are increasing.
Cloth prices remain steady at last week's level, although yarns are firmer and Egyptians are advanced as much as twopence per lb. Calcutta hás been responsible for the par- chases of dhooties, which have ven substantial, and also light goods, but other Indian Markets have done a little and telegraphic en quiries are more frequent Sales for China have been very small. A miscellaneous business has been done- for the smaller outlets. Our market is still far from exhibiting a general activity and it is certain that a great deal more liquidation of stocks has yet to take place to ease the financial situation, but the steadiness of cotton" is having a good effect and more confidence is apparent. Other factors working in the same direction "are slightly better reports from overseas the Trade makets, the signing Agreement with Russia, and the prospect of a reduction in the Bank Rate: Owing to the Easter Holidays this report will not be issued next week.
