LONDOR, April 21.

In the House of Commons, Major I. D. Birahalli asked whether Chinese children in Hongkong under fourteen years of age were permitted to, wek upwards of seventy hours a week.

Sir Kingsley Wood replied that the Governor has been asked to report on the subject of child labour. There appeared at present to be no legala tion. He would very carefully consider the matter when the Governor's report was received.

Further replying to Major Birchall with regard to the wi jai system, Sir Kingsley Wood referred to the reply given on April 13. He said that he was advised that "semi-slavery" was not a correct description of the position of these girls.

"At the conclusion of a meeting of the miners' exécutive it was stated that reports from various districts indicated that the miners firmly adhered to the principle of a national wages board and a national pool of profits. No farther communications have been received from the Government and coal-owners. A conference of miners is being held to-morrow morning in order to consider the situation.

MEA. LANG NOMINATED.

The nomination of a representative to act on the Legislative Council during the temporary: absence from the Colony of the Hon. Mr. P Holyoak occupied the attentica of members of the Hongkong Chamber of Commerce at the meeting of that body held yesterday afternoon.

Outlining the purpose of the greet- ing. Mr. A. O. Lang (Vice-Chairman), who presided stated-Gentlemen, This meeting has been called at the request of the Hongkong Govern- ment to nominate a member of this Chamber to serve on the Legislative Council during the absence from the Calony of the Hon. Mr. P. H. Holyoak. As you are aware, Mr. Holyoak left the Colony, yesterday, and the chair at this meeting. therefore, devolves upon me as Vice-Chairman of the Chamber. The requisite notice has been advertised in the papers calling for nominations, and the only name- put forward is my own, proposed

by Mr. G T. Edkins, seconded by the Hon Mr. A. G. Stephen, and supported by the Hon. Mr. Holyoak and members of this Committee."

As you are aware, the proposed Stamp Ordinance comes up for second reading on Monday, the 25th, and in order that this Chamber and the commercial community of Hongkong should be represented at the next meeting of the Legislative Council, and the views of members of the Chamber, regarding which a meeting will be held immediately after this meeting is over, should be laid before the Government, it is necessary that the Chamber daw nominates its t representative for the Comcit. I will now call upon the proposer and seconder to support the nomination.

Mr. G. T. In the House of Commons, in introducing the air estimates and dealia with £167,000 for air services in Egypt, mostly for housing the personnel, Capt. the Hon. F. T. Guest déclared that Egypt would be the central flying depot in the East. With regard to civil aviation, Capt. Guest explained that the subsidised London-Paris service was running for seven months experiment ally, the Air Council guaranteeing a profit of ten per cent. to each of the two firms concerned. The Air Ministry would pay £75, for each single flight provided that the maximum total did not exceed £25,000 to each firm. This arrangement provided one fight each way daily.
