"They do more than

they satisfy!"

This is the package with the moisture-proof jacket that keeps Chesterfield's original freshnessand favor intact.

Chesterfields "introduce you" to an entirely new kind of cigarette enjoyment. They not only please your taste, but they do something else besides.

You know what a big, juicy beefsteak " does for your hunger.

Chesterfields do exactly the same thing for your smoking. They let you know you're smoking. They SATISFY!

The blend does it. And the blend can't be copied.

If you want a smoke that really “satisfies" try a Chesterfield.

JAPAN'S BOYAL HOUSE.

CROWN PRINCE'S BETROTHAL.

COURT INTRIGL'E.

There are probably few people in the West who can comprehend the true inwardness of what has taken place respecting the betroths of the Crown Prince of Japan. There have evidently been strong feelings aroused in Japan itself, and the Japanese public has shown its sentiments in a very pronounced manner, which has had the effect of subduing the opposition to the Crown Prince's engagement to Princess, Nagako. The Princess is the daughter of General Prince Kuni, who does not belong to one of the Bvey Kugé (courtier) families who for sev-i MACHINES centuries have claimed the right to have the Empress chosen from among their ranks. It is stated also: that the union would do much to bring! about a termination of the domination of the military party, both in Imperial and national affairs. A further com- plication is that, as the Princess be- longs to the Satsuma clan, this fact aroused intense antagonism" from the Choshin farily, and the names of } Prince Yamagata and the Minister of{ the Household both Choskia men) became involved. The Minister has resigned, and his successor will be ap pointed, but whether Prince Yama- gata, who is President of the Council, will finally vacate his post appears doubtful. Incidentally, the question of the visit of the Crown Prince to England and Europe is mixed up with the other questions, and the whole series of matters must naturally ap pear very sumplicated to the ordinary Western reader, because of the under- fying currents that have not been made visible on this side, says the L. & C. Express.
