OVER A MILLION WORKERS NOW OUT.
EVER COALFIELD Inik.
مت
PEMUMEN AND ENGINE-WINDDAS REMUN AT WORK..
Losnos, April 1. It is estimated that over a million ecal workers are now out swelling the my of anemployed. Every coulEelde idle, buf except in a few isolated mires, flooding dangers have been temporarily averted owing to the enginemed remaining at their posts or the clerks and officials working the pumpe. Rhondda, the leader declares that the men are absolutely solid against the owners terras and there is no fear of defection. He is arranging to take test cases as regards unemployment allowances. In this connection the miners) believed that they could draw out-of-work donations immediately. On the other hand it is opined that the Act clearly excepts cases of unemployment awing to industrial disputes.
PUBLIC NOT UNDULY ALARMED.
Losnos, April 1, Reports from the coalfields throughout the country show that the stop- page of werk is general. Many thousand miners are idle but in some large coal-mining areas the pampmen and engine-winders have remained at work, Volunteers have come forward to save flooding of the mines, notably in Lanarkshire. It is asserted that Scottish miners generally have never entered into a struggle with less enthusiasm A few pickers are on duty in many pits
●but up to the present there has been perfect order. Whilst the majority of the members of the Coal-Owners' Association have left London, a small comittee empowered to negotiate remains. It is expected during the day! there will be pouparlers beteken this body and the members of the Govern-| mert among whow it is stalet a slightly more optimistic impression prevails. That the public is not unduly alarmed by the crisis is evidenced by the fact that there has been no rush to buy coal The effect upon the workers in several industries has already been disastrous. Steel works and blast far- unces have shut down and hundreds more steel workers will be rendered idle by the enforced closing down of the Bell -Dora group of iron and steel works, which is one of the largest steel producing combines in the country.
OUR LOSS AMERICA'S GAI.
LONDON, April 1 SŌwing to the reports from the varions coalfields to-night the outlook, is gegarded as grave. It is pointed out that the strike is for a national wage por es national subsidy at the expense of the taxpayers, while the ewngs decieve that they are still prepared to negotiate. Spesial constables are being ded to the various districts. Meanwhile, it is painted out that the soal export trade was just beginning to regain its feet-after the last stride when an enormous volume of orders was diverted to America Consequently when Work was resumed foreign markets were overstocked from America ung the long stoppage anticipated and the British had to face a heavy fall in prices which were recently just beginning to recover. It is declared that the pro- spect of recovery has now been indefinitely postponed and feats are expressed that upon resumption the industry will not be able to pay the reduced wages now offered. America has again been flooded with inquiries and is straining every nerve to take advantage of this second opportunity.

It is officially stated that op to the present, three hundred of the prisoners who broke jail have been secaptured. It appears that the prisoners on March 24, refused to work, saying that they would no longer work for the Government but only for Mr. Gandhi. Subsequently, while the guard was being changed, the prisoners seized sticks and other weapons, rushed the guard and streamed out of the prison. The convicts attacked Shanghai and North Chine
