GERMAN BLUMP.

CAUSED BY FEAR OF ENTENTE.

BERLIN, March 21. Following the receipt of the Silesian plebiscite results, spices on the Bourse paradoxically slumped. The market was apparently affected by the appearance of the newspapers which apprehensively piped a chorus welcoming the aggregate German majority but nevertheless fearing that the Entente would readjust the frontiers so as to give Poland the districts wherein the Poles secured majorities, notably the south and south-east, some parts of which are exceedingly valuable industrially.

COMPANY REPORT.

HONGKONG FIRE "INSURANCE "COMPANY, LTD.

We are indebted to the Day Press. for the following

The report · of the General Managers (Messrs. Jardine, Mathe 500 & Co. Ltd.), and Consulting Committee states:-

Working Account, 1919-This account shows 2 surplus of $332,092.06.

Reinsurance Fund-It is proposed to appropriate £15,000, at exchange 3/13-$102,400, out of the profits of the year 1919 to the credit of this fund. The fund will then stand at £138,268.3.10.

Government buildings are already beflagged in celebration of the German majority secured in Silesia. It in semi-officially stated that there were 713,700 pro-German votes and 460,700 pro-Polish in the whole plebiscite area. The voting in the Pless district was 14,000 pro-German and 41,000 pro-Polish. In the Rybaik district it was 28,000 pro-German · Investment and Exchange Fluctna- and 50,000 pro-Polish. Herr Ebert telegraphed the German representative tion Account-Depreciation in the in Silesia expressing his joy at the result. A telegram from Dr. Simons market prices of gold securities and received in London states that all the towns, especially in the industrialuctuations in the world's exchanges have reduced the sum standing at centres, gave an overwhelming majority of Gerwan votes: The only credit of this account to $67,788 72. Polish majorities are in the country, especially in districts where troops were not sent in time to protect the German population from the "Polish terror.**

Official figures of the upper Silesian plebiscite show that the greater part of the territory will remain German, So far there is a majority of two to one but the two important districts of Pless and Rybnik are likely to give a Polish majority and are still outstanding. A pro-German result should be an advantage to Britain, enabling Germany with the retention of those coalfields to be better able to pay reparations but the failure to secure this rich mineral territory will be serious to Poland.

کی

BERLIN, March 21,

It is proposed to transfer $13,692.06 from the profits of the year 1919 to the credit of this account, which will

then stand at $51.480.78.

Dividend-The General Managers ard Consulting Committee bare pleasure in recommending a dividend of $27 per share absorbing $216,000. Working Account, 1920.-The balance at credit of this account is $536,724.87.

Consulting Committee-Messrs. G. W. Barton and C. S. Gubbay resigned their seats on account of their depar inture from the Colony and Messrs. E. P. White and H. W. Sassoon were invited to fill the vacancies.

The official results, published at nine this morning, of the plebiscite upper Silesia, state that 876.000 voted for Germany and 389,000 for Poland. Returns of two important districts where a Polish majority was likely are missing.

Seven rebels were killed, seven wounded, and six taken prisoner DIOCESAN BOYS' SCHOOL. Three civilians were wounded in an ambush. A sergeant who was missing after the ambush was found blindfolded and shot, bearing a card which said: "executed." Colonel Allen asked in view of this appalling list could Sir H. Greenwood assure the House that his powers and measures were sufficient? He declared that the House was ready to give him any powers necessary to deal with the situation. (cheers.) Się H. Greenwood replied that these severe casualties occurred in the martial law area. He would always whole-heartedly support the Commander-in-chief there.

The finals in the annual sports of the Diocesan Boys' School were held on the University ground, on Monday. afternoon, the heats having been run off the previous" week.""About"ace- third of the whole school entered for the various events, all of which were contested with vigour, and keenness.

The prizes were distributed by Mrs Winfield, the Senior Lady Teacher, at the school. At the conclusion three hearty cheers were given for Mrs Winfield, the University and the staff of the school. The Hon-Secretaries were the Rev. A. J. S. Stearn and Mr Trafford, who were ably assisted by other members of the Staff and the Senior boys.

A great haul of treasure, of which some is apparently from the Russian crown jewels, was made by customs officials searching the trunks of the Russian trade commission visiting here. The boxes contained a quantity of precious stones and medals, seventeen kilograms of silver coins, four and a half kilograms of gold coin, a beautiful necklace, costly gold embroidered fabrics, and Persian rugs: Less than half the trunks up to the-1, Chau Hung Kai; 2, John Chan. present have been searched.
