SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL EVENT.
As reported in our second edition yesterday, the annual Bower and vegetable show of the Hongkong Horticultural Society was successfully held at the Botanical Gardens yester day afternoon. A large gathering visited the exhibition throughout the `afternoon and evening. While the quality of some of the exhibits was somewhat below the average, in some sections the standard was high. The absence of sunshine and the spell of damp weather which set in a couple of days before the show caused the cut flowers to suffer, but in spite of this there were many exhibits which were greatly admired. Roses were the principal exhibit in the show, and as in former years, Mr. R. Nicholson carried all before him in this class. The table decorations which every year have seen keen competition amongst the ladies showed a high "standard of artistic skill. The first prize in this department went to Mrs. A. H..Compton who exhibited a caste ful arrangement of larkspa: and com-

ALLIES AND GERMANY.
PRELIMINARIES,
LONDON, March 2.
A communique says that the allied delegations conferred at St. James Palace at noon and heard a report from their legal and economic advisers. They subsequently conferred with Foch, Wilson, and other military experts, and adjourned at one o'clock. The conference resumes at Downing Street at five this afternoon.
COMMENTS.
BERLIN, March 2,
German special "correspondents in Loodan emphasise the seriotteness of the situation, while opining that the negotiations have not broken down They believe that Lloyd George spoke with intentional sharpness as an offset to Herr Simons' rejection of the Paris decision. The papers, following the line of the correspondents, believe that the Allies realise they are dwelling in the region of illusions and that a second and even a third conference will be necessary to bring them back to realities. All declare that von Simons' offer represents the limit of Germany's capacity.
The Echo de Paris states that the eastern railway has been ordered 10 prepare to transport reinforcements to the Rhine.
