HISTORIC CONFERENCES.

NEAR EAST AND REPARATIONS TO BE DISCUS

FOREIGN DELEGATES ARRIVING.

LONDON, Febru

The stage is now set for the historic Near East and reparations conferences in don which it is hoped will result in a out settlement of the

profilcips arising principal remaining

of the wark Apart from the Belgian and Turkish Nationalist

of whom are coming to Lbadan, frany Roma representatives, practically all the foodgn delegations have now arrived. The French representative headed by M. Briand and including, General Couraud, and the Italian representatives, headed by Signor Sforza, the Foreign Minister, reached London Last night. The Turkish Government delegates, and the Greek delegation, headed by the Premier, M. Kalogeropoulos, are already here, Lloyd while M. Venizelos has returned to London From Friis George, and M. Briand had a cordial meeting at Victoria Station last night when it was arranged that Mr. Lloyd George, M. Briand, and Signor Slezza should hold a preliminary conference at Downing Street to-day.

.. KNOTTY PROBLEMS.

The official meeting with the Greek and Turkish delegates took place in the historic picture gallery at St. James's Palace. The conference is not expected to begin before Wednesday at the earliest, in view of the necessity of the two Turkisa delegations first coming to an agreement in order that they may appear together before the conference. The difficulties of the conference are exemplified by the fact that while Greece demands that the Treaty of Sevres should not be altered, France favours radical revision in favour of Turkey, including, It is understood, retrocession to Turkey by Greece of the whole of the Smyma erea, except, perhaps, the city of Smyma, the fate of which it is suggested should be determined by plebiscite after a term of years...

FRANCE AND REPARATIONS.

February 21..

With regard to the reparations conference opening on March 3, it is emphasised in a message from Paris that the whole of France is determin- ed not to tolerate farther concessions to Germany and wants alf doubts removed with regard to the enforcement of penalties in the event of German default. In this connection it is suggested that instead of occupy- ing the Ruhr in such an event France might advance into Bavaria and that the recent speeches of Herr von Simons in South Germany inciting resist- ance to the Allies' demands can be attributed to this possibility.

MANCHESTER FIRES,

DAMAGE TO STOCK-YARDS ESTIMATED AT £30,000.

The Manchester fires numbered a dozen. The damage to stock-yards was £30,000. In one case the incendiaries fired shots at a farmer who refused to hold up his hands. Up to the present two arrests have been made.

FORTHCOMING MEETING IN HONGKONG.

According to the Catholie magazine Religias e Patria, a meeting will take place next month in Nazareth, Pok- felum, of all the Bishops of the Mis- sions Etrangeres de Paris, throughout the Far East, for the purpose of modi fying and altering the rules of the Society, which was established 300 years ago. Hongkong was chosen for the place of the meeting on account of its central position.

There are already about 30 prelates here from various parts, including Mons. Pozzoni, Bishop of Hakodate, a great admirer of the ancient Porta guese missionaries.

The Magazine further states that Mens. Pozzoni, availing himself of the presence of so many bishope, in- tends in accordance with the recom- mendation made by the Pope, to cele
