SHADOW OF AMRITSAR.

He said that since landing be felt around him bitterness and estrange ment between those who had been and should bê friends. The shadow of Amritsar had lengthened over the far face of India. He expressed the King's deep concern and his own interse feeling at the terrible chapter of events in the Punjab. As an old friend of India. he movingly appealed to British and Indians to let the dead past buy its dead, forgive where Gecessary, and co-operate to realise their new-born hopes.

MISCHIEVOUS DELUSIONS. "

ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY'S RECKLESS CHARGES ACTIONABLE!

# UNJUSTIFIED AS CRUEL”.

LONDON, February 10.

Sir West Ridgeway, President of the British North Barneo Chartered Co., in a letter to the Times referring to the charges made by the Anti- Slavery and Aborigizes Protection Society against the admiḍistration of the North Borneo Co., which were officially investigated and declared unfounded, strongly advises the Society's committee to exercise some supervision and restraint over well-meaning zealots who are obsessed by the delusion that every British employer of native labour is a tyract and that every Government official in the countries inhabited by native races is necessarily a liar, and so drag the Society into false and compromising situations. He instances the recent attacks on the Adminstration of East Africa, West Africa, South Africa, and now North Borneo, as unjusti fied as cruel. He was advised by eminent counsel that the rebent attacks on the Chartered Company were actionable.

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND'S DETERMINATION.

BIG IMMIGRATION SCHEME.

LONDON, February 9,

Sir John Findlay, who represented New Zealand at the Imperial Confer- ence in 1911 is now in London. In an article to the Press he says that New Zealand and Australia,, while appreciating Japan's assistance in the war, are resolved to remain white man's countries and bave prepared plans for a big scheme of (1) Imperial and (2) European Immigration barring Germacs and Russians. The scheme will presently be launched. They object emphatically to a renewal of the Anglo-Japanese Treaty which is not justified since the Russian and German menaces have been removed and America is ready to make common cause in the event of a Japanese peril. The question must be properly threshed out at the coming Imperial Confe ence.

ALARMING OPINIONS.

MENTAL EXPERTS" VIEWS.

"The bagging wife, the husband full of unreasonable · complaints, and the spend theilt, are none of them sane from a medical point of view. They are all suffering frera paranoia.”

Dr. Albert Wilson, the mental specialist, tho made this statement.10 a press representative, is in com- plete agreement with the views of Sir Robert Armstrong Jones regarding in- sanity, as expressed by hisa in a mor- der trial at the Old Bailey.

"Few people,” said Dr. Wilson. **are perfectly sate. If all who were really insane were certified, there would not be enough left to take care of them.

The law is quite wrong, and Mr. Justice Darling is three hundred years out of date in his remarks. If the law were made in Harley-street, it would be more scientific and there would be greater justice.

.

"The remedy for the prevalence of ill-balanced minds, in my opinion, Lies in the application of eugenist selec- tion or marriage, and in good bringing up. Large families are also undesir- able from the point of view of mental, stability.

Dr. Bernard Hollander, author of The Insanity of Genius, In Search of the Soul, and many other works deal- ing with mental disorder, also sup ported Sir Robert Armstrong Jones.

"The medical and the legal point of view differ," said Dr. Hollander to the pressman.

"Practically every person has in- sare ideas, and the only persons cerd- fable are those who react to such ideas. In other words, will-power is the key to the problem.

**The man who is addicted to drink or to gambling is in the same category as the man with a tendency to mur- der. If the subject has not sufficient strength of will to resist the tempta- tion he gives way to his weakness.

Srrier sanity is a rarity. It is a question chiefly of upbringing, as no one is born insane.

The

"The old saying that genius is akin to insanity is based on fact. nerves of a genius are so highly strung and sensitive that they may easily become `balanced. It is the inven- tor who fails who most often becomes Insane: his sensitive. nature cannot stand the disappointment.

"We are surrounded by insane people: a grear-many of them know the points on which they are ill-bal- ariced and guard against them. It is the others with whom the asylums arè filled."

The Classical Music Society of Yokohama is circularizing its mer bers to know whether they object to hearing German songs sung in the original language or whether they would prefer to hear them in trans- lations, which, however, could not be done in the case of the Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms concerts, translations of the songs of these.. composers are considered inartistic. The committee points out that it is now two years after the war and that many feel that the Society can place German music in the original 'text' po the programmes as is done in London, Paris, Rome, and Tokio..
