GERMANY SEEKING PRETEXTS FÖR EVASION.

POLEH MONACO CETED-

LONDON, February 6. The Germans are busy finding pretexts for not complying with the Allies' demands. According to the Lokalamarige, reservations will be made with regard to disarmament in East Prussia, which General Von Semckt, who is now present at the conference of premiers in Berlin, declared to be vital for Germany. He asserted that the Polish demobilisation, was a pretence. The Foles could in a single day's good march be in a position to bombard Berlin. The Bolshevist bogey is also being resuscitated. Accor ding to the Freiheit, the communists in Bavaria are urging a revolution and the formation of a soviet government in alliance with Russia against the Entente.

RUBBER STRIKTS.

"DEADENING SOUNDS NEAR HOSPITALS.

LONDON, February 6,

It is stated that recent experiments in paving a street in the Borough with rubber sheets have been satisfactory and it is suggested that the Westminster City Council adopt a similar scheme for deadening the sounds in the neighbourhood of Charing Cross Hospital. The idea is that the scheme it successful might be extended to all streets in the proximity of hospitals, It is stated that although the initial cost would be roughly double, rubber blocks would long outlast wooden blocks.

FANCY DRESS DANCE.

CHINESE RECREATION CLUB,

UNIQUE COSTUMES,

Az enjoyable function took place at the Chinese Recreation Clad of Saturday night, when some 200 guests attended a fancy dress dance. The costumes vere of wide variety, many of them being excredingly unique, Ind' the scene was one of brilliant gaiety. The hall was charmingly decorated with fanters and illuminated Howes buds, supplemented by a wealth of flags tastefully curaining the doors and windows and suspended" from the ceiling. Music for the dances was provided by the orchestra of H.M.S." Hawkins" and musicians from the Y.M.C.A.. the latter playing the extras.

The judging of costumes was en- trusted 10 a committee of ladies ap- pointed from among the guests. Miss Violet Rezavet, a fascinating squaw girl, was the Erst prize for ladies. presected by Mr. J. M. Wong, presi- dent of the Club, Mr. George Lee. as an Indian Rajah. won the gentle- men's prize, presented by Mr. B. Wong Tape. Vice-President. Mr. V Ward, as a dame, won the consolation prize.

ORGAN RECITAL.

After a big interval Mr. Denmar Fuller will resume bis, Organ Recitals and the first of a new series will be given in St. John's Cathedral on Mon- day next, at 5.30 p.m. This cessa- tion has been due to the lact that for fourth months the Cathedral Organ has been undergoing very extensive repairs and improvements. During that period paeumatic action has been put in throughout the instrument, with the exception of a small part of the Great, and this has made possible the introduction of six extra couplers which increase the possibilities of the organ. beyond a degree which can be understood by those not versed in such matters. The "improvement in the touch also renders it possible to now play pieces before impossible and the range of effets now available is in marked contrast to the Emitations which were in such a large instru- ment so marked. The Tuba which will be used at this Recital for the first time completes à tonal scheme which it has taken fourteen years of unremit ting labour to carry out and the re- sults of this addition and of the pneu- matic action will entirely eclipse any of the great number of improvements made during the long period Mr. Denman Fuller has been organist of this Cathedral.
