RESULT OF THE WRITING COMPETITION.

My dear Children,

I was very pleased with the result of the writing competition. The two prizes were wan by Arthur While (aged 7) and Wan Tso Shing laged 12). They wrote about a parrot and a dog, as you will read for yourselves, Both were very neatly written and well spelt.

I must also mention Elsa Batalha, Jean Dalziel "niid Clive White, who sent in very good papers, and these I will publish next week. Olive White is a young contributor as she is only four years old.

THE BOX IN THE ATTIC.

Did you ever more into a new house when you were about eight or Ten years old?

1

If you did you will know what fun you have for days exploring and finding out all sorts of things about the house and garden..

Molly and Jack had moved into an old fashioned house in the country, a house which was full of cupboards and which had long winding passages with steps up and down to all the rooms. Most of the rooms led out of one another and it was an ideal place for hide and seek.

Up at the top of the house there were three farge attics and here, one day, they made the discovery that: after pulling out some loose bricks in

A PARROT.

When I lived in Engand there was a Parrot who stayed. with us while his master went on holidays Now the parrot was very saucy and could talk very well.

It used to say Kasa-Cor. Kas-a-Coat is good night in West African."

It was fed on banannas and cream all the way home to England.

She could sing The Campbells are coming and You Fromised to buy me a bunch of blue Ribbons. When my sister was a baby and Mother was bathing her Polly said Fat little baby and Mother said Yes Polly and she answered Give her a nice clean perch.

to squeeze through the hole and then they found themselves in a large room up in the rafters. They put the bricks back again very carefully and did not tell anyone what they had found.

In the same attic there was a large cupboard with ahelves all round the top and though there was a skylight Just outside the cupboard the far end was in the dark, so Molly held the candle while Jack got up on a chair and had a good look round the

shelves.

On Moll he cried suddenly, "there is something on the shelf right in the corner. Whatever cam it. be?"

Molly jumped on the chair beside hira- and held up the candle and then they saw it was a big fat box.

Quick, quick Jack," said Molly "Get it down and perhaps we shall find all sorts of things in it.".

So Jack lifted the box down and they took it out of the cupboard and put it on the floor under the skylight where they could see better;

But then they found that it was tocked and you can imagine how

Impatient they were to open it.

"I know what we can do," said Molly, after she had thought for a minute, "Mother has lots of keys on her dressing table... I'll run and get them and perhaps one of them will fit the box."

"That's a good idea," Jack replied and off Molly ran and fetched the keys.

I had a little terier, called Gyp/ which was the best pet of mine: In many ways he proved himself the very dog people loved. He could do many tricks, which I taught him, just the time that he could learn, He could catch a cube-sugar by bis mouth, when I put it on his nose and could jump over a stick about as high as three feet, also many other such tricks he could do quite They tried ever so many and at well. But the best was that he could last, just so they were beginning to walk with only his fore-legs. Well despair of finding one that would all these were quite enough to show open it, Molly fitted one tiny key that he was clever. Not only these, into the lock which seemed as if it but there were many good deeds were made for it and the box opened that he had done to me when I was quite easilya nag helpless. Oa, ane occasion' I was Oh how stupid! Jack cried as walking with him when suddenly they looked inside, "There's nothing there came two robbere, who scared me very much. They Came towards- me and wished to rob me., Gyp was clever dog as you know and could jump very high, so he jumped upon the robbers and fought with them. He was nearly killed, but he was brave instead of afraid until a police came and caught the robbers. I was Every glad and carried him home. After that, I always gave him many good things to eat and treated him so kindly like a baby for he saved my life.
