BILAIAN YARD TO CLOSE

CLYDE CONTRACTS CANCELLED.

Extensive cancellations of ship- building contracts placed with Clyde builders have taken place recently. Of the eight contracts reported can- celled. four were of steamers of about 10,000 tons ordered by the Lloyd Royal Belge Societe Anonyme Antwerp; two had been ordered for Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Limited, Greenock, and two for W. Denny and Brothers, Limited, Dumbarton.

The Lloyd Royal Belge company have also decided practically to close down their Whiteinch yard after the new year. Five vessels are under construction in the yard just now, and an effort will be made to launch at least one before the end of the year. The remaining four, however, will be held up indefinitely, as prae- | tically only apprentices and staff are to be retained.
