Trenchard, Miss Ellen Terry, Sir John Hare, Sir Squire Bancroft and other notable people. Eaft Beatty said that they were not asking for charity but to help Britishers in paying their debt to those who suffered in preserving the Empire Ear! Their number today was Larger.

"

Sir Alfred Butt, in moving a vote of thanks to the Prince of Wales, paid a tribute to his services. He described him theatrically as

az ideal leading man." The Prince of Wales, speaking after Earl Haig,' said that from his experience on active service and his journey" of tens of thousands of miles through the Empire since the war, he could affirm that the cause of the ex-Service man was at present second to none in national importance. "When the country was at war we did not forget the cten who fought and gained the victory which maintained our freedom. Our instinct should not be different now."

LONDON, January 18. Bolshevist apprehensions with regard to the Turgh Nationalist advance eastward appear to be reflected in the news from Tiflis that owing to the ultimatum by the Armenian Soviet Government to Turkey, the Turks have evacuated Alexandropol. The Armenian Soviet, backed by Moscow, is also reported to have demanded the immediate evacuation of Kars, and the withdrawal of all Turkish troops to the 1914 frontiers of Armenia and full and immediate reparation for the damage done by Turkish troops in Armenia.

, MYTHICAL VICTORY CELEBRATED

CONSTANTINOPLE, January 18. There is no confirmation of the Nationalist claims to have defeated the Greeks on the Broussa front, which are probably based on the Greek withdrawal from the original lines in accordance with a plan previously notified to the Allies, but Stambul and Angora are both celebrating

ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES.

DOMINATING FACTOR IN WORLD-WIDE CIVILISATION.

NEW YORK, January 19.

In a hitherto unpublished letter written in September to Mr. Stewart, Chairman of the Sulgrave Institute, President-elect Harding emphasises the duties of the English-speaking peoples as the predominating factor in world- wide civilisation. He expresses the opinion that when America is summon- ed to assist the world in building an agreement or an association for the prevention of war the English-speaking peoples will play no small part in that work, not evading the rights and not excluding the fellowship of other nations but protecting and including them.

VLADIVOSTOK INCIDENT.

DECEASED OFFICEES STATE-

MENT.

ADMIRAL GLEAVES INTERVIEWED,

An Associated Press message from Washington on January 13 stated- Admiral Gleaves. commander-in- chief of the Asiatic feet, who is now in Manila, reported to the Navy Department to-day that the Japan ese commander at Vladivostok had issued orders that hereafter sen- tries must not challenge Americans.

The Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Shidebara, said that the sentry, who is very ignorant, has been arrested and will be court-wartialled..

Lieutenant Langdon in a statement before he died said that he was returning to his ship, using his hand lamp. When epposite the Japanese division headquarters, the sentry ran across the street, taking a position to charge, beyond to the left and six feet · in front. Langdon said that he halt- ed until the sentry said "America noski" Replying, he said, he was walking past the sentry and when six feet beyond, the sentry fired on him, the ball striking him in the back. Langdon then said he fired two re- volver shots. The sentry, he said, permitted him to return to his abip.

Admiral Gleaves reported to the Navy Department that Lieutenant. Langdon was in full uniform, the cloth wounds showing that he was shot in the back.

Admiral Gleaves, interviewed by an Associated Press représentative- made the following statement:

"I will appoint a board of senior American officers to investigate the shooting of Lieutenant Langdon as soon as full advices are received from the "Albany," and I will proceed in the "Huron," with the board to Vladivostok, as soon as the "Huron." which is undergoing an overhauling, la ready for sea

*Japanese bigh. officials at Vladi- vostok have expressed in every way possible their deepest regrets and 'condolences, and have given assur- ance of a prompt, full and open in- vestigation of the affair." "Admiral Gleaves said that in case. it became necessary to leave for Vladivostok before the repaire were completed on the "Huron,” he would proceed in a destroyer to Shanghai and from there go to", Vladivostok on board the cruiser "New Orleans. He expected the re- pairs on the "Huron, to be completed within four days, making it uprecessary to take the round about route to Vladivostok. At this time of year it would be impracticable to send a destroyer to the Siberian pors, as it would be unable to make is way through the ice.
