WASHINGTON, January 16.

The first year's results of prohibition show that the people consumed 41,000,000 proof gallons of distilled spirits, leaving $1,000,000-In bonded warehouses. Spirits are still being made in 14,000 filict distilleries. About 123,000 gallons of spirits were destroyed and 93,000 stills demolished Storage tax and fines totalled over $23,000,000.

MORE SERIOUS RIOTING IN CORK.

CUSTOMS OFFICER KILLED.

LONDON, January 16. Serious rioting took place in Cork yesterday evening following an attack on two policemen coming from a football match both of whom were, wounded Armed police in motor lorries proceeded to clear the streets. Firing continued during the afternoon and night. There were a number of other casualties, including a customs officer who was shot dead and: two women and four civilians who were wounded.

The majority of the students of the three large private colleges afkated to the Calcutta University have deserted their studies, demanding nationalisation of the colleges and the establishment of a national university. Strike pickets also induced four hundred students of St. Xavier's. College to strike. All tari-cab drivers in Calcatta have strack, alleging that the Police are harshly enforcing trafic regulations.

The assertion of Sir Ernest Wild that the population of London's Chinatown, has been reduced to 300 has been denied by the Magistrate, Mr. Cairs, of the Thames Police Court who said that there has been no appreciable difference in the size and population of Chinatown during the last twelve months, but as a result of the activity of the Police against immorality, gambling and opium, szɔok- ing Chinatown is now quieter and more law-abiding than at anytime dur- ing the last twelve years.
