THE NEW LONDON.

AS A FRENCHMAN SEES IS.

-

BY A VISITOR FROM FRANCE.

For the frst time for nine years I have revisited London. Yet in pre- war days 1- must have crossed the Channel hilly a hundred times,

From 1911 to 1920 is & long. stretch, but not long enough to ne... Cont Jor the bewildering change which has taken place in the London bar I knew. On the many tips across the Channel which I undertook in the old days I never landed beneath the high white cliffs of Dover with- our the sensation of emering a strange fand.

+7

The English have never quite real- ised, it seems to me, bow atterly different from France England it first sight appeared to the eyes of the French. The queer coloured trains, the red-coated soldiers, the news- paper posters in the streets-I could. cite you examples of a hundred Fittie things which leapt to the French eye.

Perhaps because of our inbom dis- inclination from foreign travel-1, as

a born Parisian, am the first to admit this failing of ours--the scene on the |landing-stage at Dover or Folkestone was as strange to French eyes as though one were to plant a COLNET, say, of the Gobi desert on the grand boulevards.

But the war has changed all that Maybe we in France have become accustomed to the sight of British faces, of British khaki, to the sound of the English tongue on the Channel seaboard during the war. Maybe our lace has brought not only the hearts but also the minds of our two peoples closer together. The fact re- mains that to me, passing from France to England the other day, the, Chan- nel crossing had ceased to be an ad- yeattre. It was bat a step which kinded me almost imperceptibly in English surroundings.

Am I wrong in summising that the war has tended to continentalise the English? Have you not become less self-absorbed, less stiff? Friendly. you have always been, even in the darkest days Of Anglo-French estrangement, and the politeness ef all classes, down to the humblest, folk, has always filled me with affectionate respect. But I am greatly strack to find that there is so much more know- fedge of foreign peoples in England than there was. It is revealed in a much quicker understanding of Eng- fish even as badly "broken" as mine and a much readier sympathy with the tæreigner.

Most travellers have noticed that etch capital has its characteristic odour. Paris, so my English friends tell me, smells of burning peat or emp wood. To me the scent of Low- don was a mixture of tobacco smoke,

But even the odour of London has changed. The old familie azrid scient which rose to the nostrils as the bot train thundered across the river has vanished, at least such was my ex- perience; smothered in the all-pervad ing perfume of pefiol.'

London seems cleaner, more crowd- ed than of yore. And people trë busier. There are lower flaneurs. I miss sadly in your hurrying throngs the most characteristic London touch of all, the splash of the soldier's red cont.

But I recognise with intense satis- faction the whole-hearted sympathy for France which pervades every class, which makes our cordial under- standing a living link between oer two peoples in a degree which, I sometimes think, is not fully appre....... cisted by my countrymen at home.

REPORTED DISCOVERY..

AFTER 100 YEARS SEARCH.

LONDON, Dec The legendary diamond mines in the State of Guerrero, which ever since the days of Emperor Iturbide have been sought for by the curious," again the subject of animated dis- cussion in Mexico

A well-known Mexican geologist, who recently returned from a tour ef exploration asserted that he had eat- ed the lost mines. Exploring parties are now said to be in process of or- ganisation.

General Guerrero, after whom the State was named, is believed to have discovered the diamonds more than 100 years ago, says Reuter, and to have presented to Emperor Iturbide mumerous gems of immense value.

The General died, however, with- out disclosing the location of the trea- sure, and the wild regions of that sparsely populated State have from time to time been explored in an effort to find mines.
