NEW VICEROY,

JUSTICE LORD READING'S SOLE DESIRE

· PITFALLS OF POLITICS.

LONDON, January 11. Replying to the congratulations of the Bar voiced by Sir Gordon Hewart, the. Attorney General, in the High Court this morning in the presence of judges, the lords of appeal, the leading barristers and many embers of the public, Lord Reading, who, was greatly moved, said that he did not propose to guess the reasons for his selection as Viceroy seeing that he had no knowledge of India, but, he abided by the assertions of those competent to judge. He continued: "I leave the judicial beach not forsaking and zot abandoning the pursuit of justice but rather pursuing it in larger fields but ca a road not so certain or well laid. In the la courts a man is limited by the facts of the evidence before him, whereas in politics he has not all the factors always before him until perhaps long after he has given his decision." He was going to India with the sole desire to do right and he believed he could not make a failure.

The Chancellor said that the great masses of the population working their hardest were unable to earn sufficient to procure the barest necessaries The only remedy was to stabilise exchange and increase production by means of ample foreign credits. The labour delegates demanded corporal, even capital, punishment for profiteers, one railway representative saying that unless drastic measures were taken his comrades would hang pro- fiteers in front of the Bourse.
