LOST.
DIAMONDS STOLEN.
STRANGE DISAPPEARANCE.
REWARD FOR INFORMATION,
Siam is unce more the scene of a mysterious" disappearance of jeweb. One is reminded of the famous case of the loss of the Queen of Siam's pearl "necklace by a report just made to the police by Mr Adolphe Alder, diamond merchant, Armenian-street, now re i siding,a: Rafies Hotel, Singapore,
It appears that on Nav, 22 last he left Singapore for Bangkok by the "Kuala." Just beforë going to Bangkok his stock of diamonds was all correct. On his arrival at Bang- kok he handed over to the Customs his sealed 'bags containing bis stock of diamonds. The next day he made his declaration and took out about £10,000 worth of gems, leaving the remainder in the bag, which was sealed by his seal and that of the customs. He then ordered one bag to be jaken to the Siam Commercial Bank for safe custody, leaving the other with the customs. The following day he had orders for further goods and went to the Customs again to take some more diamonds out. He then found two packets, containing diamonds to the value of £5,770, missing. He made enquiries, but no satisfaction could be obtained. Previous to that he had lost a parce, at Saigon, valced at £58, and on arriving at Singapore from Saigos he found two pearl sets valued at £200 missing.
Mr Alder has no idea of how the 200da Were actually lost. They were; lost while he was travelling from Singapore to Bangkok, from there to Saigon and from Saigon back. to Singapore. The total amount of the less is estimated at £6,538, and the diamond merchant is willing to pay 10 per cent. on the value of the articles to anyone who can give in- formation which will lead to the recovery of the articles.
THE WORLD TO-DAY.
PRESENT CONDITION.
· PUT IN A
NUTSHELL
A Chicago paper prints the follow- ing: Put 100 men on an island
staple article of, where fish is a sustenance. Twenty-five of the men catch fish Twenty-five cook the fish. Twenty-five hunt fruit and vegetables. The entire company eats what thus is gathered and pre- pared.
So long as everybody works there is plenty. All hands are happy.
Ten of the allotted fish-catchers stop catching fish.
Ten more dry and hide part of the
5sh they catch.
Five continue to catch fish, but werk only part of the day at it.
Fewer fish go into the community kitchen
But the saine number of men invist upon having the same amount of fish to eat as they had before.
The 50 men who formerly cleaned and cooked the fish have less to do, owing to the undersupply of fish. But they continue to demand food..
Gradually greater burdens are laid pon the fruit and vegetable hunters. These insist upon a larger share of fish in return for their larger efforts in gathering fruit and vegetables, I is denied them, and soon 20 of the 25 quit gathering fruit and veg. etables.
But the entire 100 men continue to insist on their right to eat.
The daily food supply gradually shrinks. The man with two fishes demands three bananas in exchange for one of them. The man with two bananas refuses to part with one for fewer than three fish.
Finally the 10 men, remaining at work quit in disgust. Everybody continues to ear. The hidden fish are brought to light and consumed. Comes a day when there i no food of any kind. Everybody on the island blames everybody else.
What would seem to be the We thought solution? Exactly! you would guess it.
