POLICE SURPRISE ARMED CIVILIANS,
SIX PERSONS KILLED.
ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO BURN "FREEMAN'S JOURNAL" OFFICE
LONDON, December 27.
A dance in which armed civilians were participating was surprised at Bruff in Limerick within the martial law area this morning. The approach- ing forces were fired on by the dancers and a policeman was killed. The fire was returned, five dancers being killed. The civilian sentries at the dancing hall were overpowered and 138 were, arrested and taken to Limerick.
Christmas was generally quiet in Dublin. The activity of the police and military was confined on Xmas Eve to clearing the streets of roysterers who ignored the curfew order. There was considerable shooting in the streets. Several persons were slightly wounded, including a soldier. The most serious incident was another attempt to burn the offices of the Freeman's Journal by three men in a motor car who sprinkled the premises with petrol The flames, however, were extinguished by the fire brigade with the greatest promptitude.
