The National Assembly at Versailles has elected M. Millerand Pre
sident.

-The National Assembly voting for M. Millerand was 695; and for Delory, the Socialist deputy from the Nord 69. There were only two candidates. The total votes were 892, of which 20. were scattered and 108 were blank, M. Millerand received a great ovation when he entered the Assembly which was opened by M. Leon Bourgeois, President of the Senate. The fact that the election of M. Millerand was considered a fare gone conclusion, together with very wet weather, lessened the interest in the ceremony, at which the attendance was only about half that at the ceremony.in January last.

FORD COMPANY'S DECISION.
DETROIT, September 22nd. The Ford Company has announced the re-establishment of pre-war prices immedi ately, which means 14 and 31 per cent. reduction, respectively, in the prices of motor-lorries and small cars, on the ground of the recessity of making a beginning to bring back the life of the country to the normal and call a halt to war methods-of bigh prices and profiteering. A Havas message states that the Parliamentary Committee for Com merce and the Republican Committee for Commerce, Industry and Agricul ture, gave a luncheon in honour of Baron Matsui, the Japanese Ambassador, upon his leaving France. The whole affair was a most hearty manifestal tion of French and Japanese amity.. Several Cabinet Ministers were among the guests, The ex-Cabinet Minister, M. Chaument, in an address, laid stress on the important part Baron Matsui had pisyed in the European politica field in recent years. Senator Mascurand, rising in tårn, cloquently showed bow faithfully Japan had stood by the Allies and carried out all her engage- ments towards them. Baron Marsui, replying expressed the hope that intercourse between Japan and France would become more frequent and more intimate.

It appears that heavy blows were inflicted on the Bolsheviks, first by the Poles on the Galician front. and then by General Wrangel's forces advancing from the Crimes now operating on a wide front in the Ukraine. It is stated that the Reds are seeing on both fronts and have already lost rear ly 5,000 prisoners, and that a junction between the Poles and General Wrangel seems imminent.

A sensational fight involving the deaths of five people occurred in County Clare when a lorry transporting a number of constabulary was ambushed by a large force of armed men. WASHINGTON, Sept. 21. Senator Harding, in his election speeches, has been commenting on the inconsistency of President wa son's policy in Hayti and the self- determination clauses of the League of Nations Covenant.
Mr. Bainbridge Colby, in reply. has issued a statement saying that the Government hopes to end the occupation of Hayti as soon as the benevolent purposes for which it in

A Presidential mandate issued last night proclaims that the recognition conferred on the Russian Minister and the Consuls has been withdrawn in- consequence of these officials of the 'old Russian Government having lost their official status since the Revolu tion.
