GIGANTIC AEROPLANE,

800 PASSENGERS.

10 HOURS TO AMERIČA.

Lord Londonderry, Under-Secretary of State for Air, opened the sixth Aero Show at Olympia, London...

As be entered the building his eres were greeted by a flying machine so Avast and massive looking that if seem ed almost impossible, even under the thrast of four great motors, that it should be able to lift its tons of weight from the earth with fourteen passengers in its electrically-beated saloon and whirl through the air at a speed of more than two miles a

minute.

After entering the saloons and sitting in the arm-chair seats of such air leviathans as the Bristol, Vickers, and Handley Page.' visitors were all the more ready to credit the news which reached the show during the morning that Signor G. Caproni, of the famous Caproni Brothers, the designers of those big biplanes and triplanes which bear their name, is now in New York with plans for an aeroplane far outstripping in size and power anything contemplated hitherto.

This huge machine is to carry in crew and passengers a total of 500 people. Such a veritable "air liner" "is designed primarily for swift non- stop trans-ocean services. It is to be driven by a series of engines develop ing as much as 12,000 horse-power.

6-MILES HIGH GALES.

--

7 More interesting in a sense than the set speeches at luncheon were the informal chats which followed them between experts whose famë is international. Listeners heard of the investigations now taking place to chart the great trade winds of the upper air. At vast heights above the earth there are gales. blowing with a velocity almost undreamt of at earth level. They would, in fact, blow our cities to pieces if they ever reached the ground. An airman of whom one is told, climbing to the dizzy height of nearly six miles, re- ported a great wind blowing at a speed of 175 miles an hour. Balloon soundings, made ar nearly 30,000ft, have:ecorded by instrument a super- gale of just on 200 miles an hour.

The point science is now aiming at, and which forms a topic of con- versation at the show, is to chart and determine these mighty trade winds of the upper attitudes, so that they can be made to aid Transatlantic fiying.

practical point your attention is a called to is that if the navigator of a LabURIS, Transatlantic aircraft can manœuvë his machine as a matter of routine into one of these mighty currents, air passengers from New York to London may End their journey com- pleted in about ten hours. And when at the moment you hear this you are standing beneath the wing of a plane which has actually cleaved the air at a speed not far short of 200 miles an hour, scepticism seems very out of place.

Another centre of interest was the Vickers "amphibian," which trundles down its slipway and plunges into the water almost like a living creature; which skims scross the water and leaps suddenly into the air; which fies with all the freedom of the bird, and which then drops neatly on to the surface of the water again to come swimming in and climbing to the land in order to regain its shed:

simple: In the interior of his palace the ruler caused to be constructed a large tank or basin, which he kept filled with water. Then he took several teak logs, which he had bored with holes, and into these holes he put his specie reserve of gold and silver. The holes, were closed up and the logs put into the tank. -

Then some crocodiles of the larrest and fiercest description were installed in the tank and maintained there not being fed, however, with such a superfluity as to interfere with their natural ferocity. Any person who should undertake to reach the treasure laden logs would surely be eaten by the crocodiles. And any one who should undertake to put the saurians out of the way would have to make noise enough to attract the attention of the human guards and of the ruler himself, for he, by Annam custom, is required to remain very closely in his palace.

At any rate the royal crocodile treasury has never been robbed-and it cannot burn. The Argonaut.
