The question of the League of Nations is leading to most beated debates in the Sub- Committee drafting the platform, betweza, the raild reservation group, led by ex- Senator Crane, and the Anti-League Group, under Senator Borah."

Senator Lodge is using his infnence in an esdeatour to compromise, but the differ. ences have culminated in a threat by the irreenciables rot leave the party unless it declares fatty against the Leagua Thus, the League issue becomes the fermost question of the Convention, not excepting even the Presidential nominations.

The betting inclines in favour of Senator Hiram Johnson's candidacy, although the Republican Convection has given ze sign upon whom its choice will fal. Meanwhile, the Committees engaged in framing the Republican platform of the League of Nations remain the centre of speculation. CHICION, June 10th. The Republican Convention has accepted the League of Nations formula drafted by Senator Root as a basis of compromise, despite the threats of the irreconcilables to turned leave the party unless the League is tur down. The Sub-Committee which is en- deavouring to fad a basis of compromise with a view to consolidating the party is progressing in complete agreement. The imminent Roots' compromise provides for a new agreement with other nations, includ- ing a tribunal for the settlement of inter- national disputes.

Senator Borah described it as establish- ing the principles for which the irrecon- ciable contended, namely, the omission of the ratification of the pledge, commerda- tion of the Senate's refusal to ravify the Treaty, also that any League of Nations must accord with the ideals of George Washington,

Senator Hiram Johnson declared that the first assault of internationalism and international backers on the Republican Party has been met and defeated.

Carcico, June 10th. The Sub-Committee of the Republican Convention drafting the platform has adopted a plank reciting Republican achievereats, despite the unconstitu tional and dictatorial '↳ act of President Wilson. The Committee has decided not to discuss Prohibition in the platform.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 9th

Mr. Cummings, the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, says that the main plank of the Democratic platform will be a declaration in favour of the ratification of the Treaty.

BRITAIN'S TRADE.

Loxoos, June 10th. Sir Robert Herne, writing in the Man chester Guardian, says that our foreign trade had advanced by leaps and bouzes,

The increasing the country's-colvency. most successful įraders in the future will be those who were most resourceful in reliably meeting the needs of the world's markets, A most astonishing example of the trade advance is the manner in which Lancashire and Yorkshire manufacturers are taking advantage of the American markets. As ared with the corresponding period of compared with 1919 they exported in the first four weeks fof 1920-85 per cent more cotton yarn, three times the amount of cotton piece- goods and three to five times the amount of woollen cloth.
