GERMAN TONNAGE,

TO BE DIVIDED IN JUNE.

THE PRESENT POSTION,

It is satisfactory to be able to note that the carrying out of the shipping clauses to the Peace Treaty is being properly pressed by the Reparation Commission. The London represent- ative of The Journal of Commerce, who has recently had an interview' with the Ministry of Shipping, reports that :: while, the Germans appear to be very. reluctant to handover the ships which they are required to give up under the clauses of the Pesce Treaty, German ships are again beginning to arrive in the Firth of Forth in answer to the demands of the Reparation Com mission. The Bielefeld arrived on Wednesday last; and several mere ships are expected shortly. Twoj other German ships have also been taken over in British ports (by the Government on behalf of the Reparation Commission.

It is understood that the Germans presented a petition to the Repara- tion Commission in Paris before" | Easter begging to be allowed to keep some of the smaller vessels for them- selves. This endeavour to evade the carrying out of the Peace Treaty. was very vigorously turned down, as has also been a further petition to the same effect presented some weeks ago.

A few weeks ago German dele- gates, Government officials, and res presentatives of the leading shipping companies met the members of the Maritime Service of the Reparation. Commission which sits in London at Bridgewater House, and discussed with them the outstanding matters in regard to the delivery of the Ger man ships which still remain to be. handed over. The Reparation Com- mission has also sent an inspection committee, to work in Germany, which keeps it well informed of the progress of shipping crastruction in German yards and on all matters relating to the preparing of further ships to be handed over.

None of the ships have yet per manently been disposed of. It will however, be remembered that notice was published in the press to the effect that the Reparation Commission would on the 15th June definitely set to work to divide the German tonnage among the Allied Governments, and hand it over to its

The following figures show the total of German vessels handed over at the time of the armistice, and now being managed by the various Alles. It is understood that the allocation of these ships for management gives no indication of the ultimate owner- ship of the vessels.

2,500.

These figures are approximate: and the reason why Italy has such a small share of German shipping is on account of the fact that she holds many Austrian ships, with a tonnage of about 500,000 tons. France sise holds about 60,000-tons of Austriam shipping, The British Colonies' are not managing any of the German ships handed over at the time of the armistice, but they are using a con
