A VINDICTIVE VILLAGER.
WHOLESALE MURDER OF
GUSTS.
A savage ending to a village feud is reported as having pccurred at Katajimura, Koshi, Japan, on the night of May 11th. It appears tha Komatsu Shotaro, a farmer of the village, has long been at daggers- drawn with many of his fellow. villagers on the question of the con- struction of a local road. This question, which had been pending for some years, was finally settled at a general meeting of the villagers which was held a few days agc. The basis of settlement was not advantageous to Komatsu Shotaro, büt realising that there was no contending against odds he pre- tended to sink all. the differences so far existing, and abide by the decision without protest. On the night of the 11th instant, he invited bis fellow. villagers to his house and entertained them at a feast on the pretext that it was for the purpose of celebrating the amicable settlement of the trouble. At about 11 p.m., when same guests began to leave, Shotaro slipped out of the house, and arming himself with a rifle and a Japanese sword, put the house under lock and key on the out- side. Posting himself at a window he levelled' a rifle at one of the villagers and fired, killing him on the spot. This sudden attack, threw the gay company into a great paric, and there was a stampede for the door, which was locked. The man fired into the thick of them, and killed three others. Three more who forced the door open in an attempt to escape he attacked with the sword, and badly injured. Two others were also injured. After perpetrating his horrible crime, Shoraro went to the graveyard of his family in the neigh- bourhood, and shot himself.
