CHINESE BRIDE.

END OF A JAVA ROMANCE,

DIVORCE FOR "VERY RICH " MAN'S DAUGHTER.

whose

Mrs Angel Caulfelld-Stoker, of Grosvenor street, London, maiden name was Oeitisngham (sald to be the daughter of a wealty China- man) was granted a divorce decrea by Sir Henry Duke on April 19 against her husband, Beauchamp Caulfeld- Stoker, because of his desertion and misconduct. There was no defence.

The marriage was in 1909 at Semi- arang, Java, and the couple lived at Graylands, Wimbledon Park,

Sir E. MarshallHal; K.C., said that Mrs. Caulfeld-Stoker, was the daughter of a very wealthy China-

man. The marriage, articles were. drawn up on October 22, 1909, and a handsome settlement was made on the couple. They were married on... October 25, and the husband a little fa.er was appointed director of a very' large commercial agency in Mincing, lane, London, dealing very extensive ly in sugar, of which the father was practically the sole owner. It was a very lucrative post.

The parents also sailed for Europe, and a house was taken at Wands- worth by the father, said counsel. In May 1912 Mrs. Caulfelic-Stoker had a child. She had to complain rather bitterly that her husband never Introduced her to his people, who lived in Somerset, In 1913 a house was taken for them at Wimbledon Park, so that she should have a home and take her proper place in society to which her father's position en en titled her..

In February 1915 Mr. Caulfeild- Stoker obtained a commission in the Army Service Corps and went to Devonport. She was very anxious to go with him and offered to take a house. But he made all sorts of excuses. He said he did not want

her to go down. At Christmas 1915, when on leave at the Wimbledon Park house, he occupied a separate room. After he had returned to Devonport she let the house furnished and went to live at the Ritz Hotel He came there and stayed two or three days, and again. occupied a rocm apart from her.

In June, after he had gone back to

culous your coming down here. This place may be somewhat better in, peace time when there is yachting going on, but now it is quite impos sible. You could not stick to it more than two or three days. You would have absolutely nothing to do.. It would be no good your coming here to be gaped at and then go off. I would far sooner you didn't. Is fact, if you came I should have to apply for leave, and then I certainly would not stop here.

evening dress. He cut her (his wife) dead. He was to have gone to see ber on the following day, butwrote from Grove Park:

Dear Queenie, Shan't turn up tor day as I have been cheap for the last two days-temperature at night. I think I caught a chill on Thursday night when was in town dining with a brother officer and his wife and sister-in-law, who were off to Indis, sailing from Devonport, and had to catch the midnight train. We al went to some show, can't remember

the name.

It was at this show, said counsel, that the wife had seen her husband. Later they met by appointment. He said he supposed she wanted to divorce him, and told her she could only do so by going to Java. She made Inquiries and learned that this was not the case. She then wrote to him: "I once more beg of you to return to me to take up our mar ried life together"

He replied:

My dear Hoey,--No doubt you will consider I am cruel in not return- ing to you as you suggest I should; but as our liver and ideas are so far apart it makes it impossible for me to do so. Wishing you the very best of luck, Yours, 'B.

On November 16 he wrote to his wife:

Dear Hoey; Herewith proof of misconduct, which it is only fair I should give you, having decided never to return to you. I enclose bill-Yours, B.

A bill of the Cavendish Hotel, Jermyn-street, was enclosed, and it was found that he had stayed there with a woman.
