Great Britain's imports exceeded its exports in value by more than 150 per cent; for the year 1919 the average was about 70 per cent., while for January, 1920, the excess of imports over experts was only 40 per cent. These figures denote a steady pro gress that is most encouraging, when it is remembered that it is scarcely more than a year since Great Britain turned from war to industry.

There have been reports. that the people of Great Britain have been consuming great quantities" of mer. chandise, and producing very little. These statements are not borne out by the estimated tonnage of imports for the year 1919, given out by the Board of Trade, which place the total tonnage of imports for 1919 at 38,963,000 tons, as compared with 54,551,000 tons in 1913. It should te noted that imports .of articles wholly or mainly manufac- tw amounted to 3,622,000 tons in 1919, as against 6,839,000 tons in 1913; food. drink and tobacco amounted to 13,517,000 tons, 39 compared with 18,066,000 tons in 1913, while raw materials amounted to 21,792,000 tons, 15 against 29,594,000 tons in the year before the outbreak of the war-Dun's International Review

CEYLON TELEPHONE

SYSTEM.

A scheme for the development of the telephone, system in Ceylon has been prepared by the officials in Colombo and "forwarded to the Postmaster-General, and will, it is ex 'ected, be in the hands of Govern- ment shortly.

+

Since the outbreak of war tele- phone development in the colony has been out of the question owing to the difficulty in obtaining materials. Repeated requests sent to England-could not be attended to except in one instance in which the vessel carrying. the goods was sunk by submarine action. At the same time the demand for telephones did not decrease, and at the present moment there is a waiting list of about four hundred subscribers some of whom

ordered intruments three or four years ago. The main' difficulty in supplying them was that the switch-boards were full. News has been received, however, that sufficient materials may be expected in the next week or two to allow of some three hundred connections being made, thus satisfy.j ing at once the majority of people waiting for instruments.

Very few details are available re- garding the scheme of development, but it is believed that telephonic, communication is to be improved in the Southern suburbs." The present number of subscribers in Colombo, is less than 2,000.
