***Tukyo, April 10---The Toyo Kišën. Kaisha has déclared a dividend of 20 per cent for the last business term. The net profit, amounted to Yen 1.075,088, and bringing forward Yen 107,110 from the previous termo, make a

total of Yen 2,145,196 The company has assigned Yen 55,000 as reserve, Yen 1,072,500 as ordinary dividend (12 per cent), and Yen 715,000 as extra dividend (8 per cent), carrying Yen 302,696 for- ward. The amount carried forward in the previous business term was Yen 1,070,000.

Reviewing the business operations of the company during the last term, at a general meeting of shareholders held on March 29. Mr. Soichiro Asano, President, said: "Freight receipts decreased by Yen 380,000 but passenger receipts showed an Increase of Yen 770,000. The reduc tion in freight rates receipts was due to the decline in freight rates, which was caused principally by the great increase In the number of American ships operating in the Pacific. More- over, the U. S.. Shipping Board ships. built in Japan carried cargo on their .voyages from this country to Amer- ica. They carried cargo practically as ballast, and as such they accepted it at very low rates. This led to a general decline in freight rates for the voyage from Japan to America:

Fortunately there were many passengers, so, mary, indeed, that it was impossible to meet all requests for passages. The increase in passen- ger receipts has had the effect of off- setting the reduction in freight receipts to some extent. The passenger traffic will surely increase with the increas ing intimacy of Japanese-American relations. If possible, we think of building passenger ships of 25,000, ton type, but the question is how to secure the cost of building them New freighters will be gradually completed, and we expect much from their operations.

"Apart from the passenger service) it is difficult to predict the future condition of freight receipts.. But there is still considerable demand for tonnage in Europe, and as a matter of fact, the steamers of the Kokusat Kiser Kaisha are operating in Euro pean waters. I do not believe that the world's supply of tonnage will exceed the demand during the next few years.

"During the past business term. we could not obtain, as good results as we had hoped for. We expected that the American taxes would not amount to over $400,000, but the actual assessment was no less than $800,000. On the other hand, we could realize a profit of Y1,400,000- by selling the "Nippon Mart," to Chile, and thus we have been enabled to maintain the dividend of 20 per cent."

The Toyo Kisen Kaisha is selling debentures for Y10,000,000 under arrangements with the Yasuda Bank, The funds are to be used for the construction of new ships.-Japur Adviser),

PASTUR

justice can in some cases be done to a deceased in a single word.

There is a stone in Leamington

·Cemetery, dedicated to the memory of one 1. T. Burgess, who before laying aside the trammels "of this mundane sphere edited the Leam- ington Spa Courier. His career and end are adequately summed up in. one word-Resting."

A departed auctioneer who lived- in the city of Worcester had inscribed on his memorial stone as an epitaph

Gone." Brief, economical, and retrospective. In a Sussex graveyard may be seen a stone on which are chiselled, after the name and date of the death of the deceased, just two expressive words "He was." Surely a sermon in a nutshell.

But two of the strangest as well as the briefest epitaphs are to be found on stone in Care Hill Cemetery, Belfast. On one of them, erected to the memory of a lazy fellow, by one- who evidently knew him well, are the worda, Asleep (as usual)." On the other, "Left Till Called For."

A certain photographer has this inscribed over his grave, Here I Lie, Taken from Life."
