in that State, The Osaks journal says that the Japanese residents in America, who suffered a heavy blow recently by the prohibition of the
picture bride" system; are constant- ly harassed by various forms of anti- Japanese movements which are started in that country from time to time. In Oregon State, which has hitherto been rather friendly 10 Japan, several at- tempts have recently been made to deprive the Japanese of landownership rights, and in the extraordinary session of the State Legislature which was convened in January, many anti- Japanese Bills were discussed. Pro- minent among these Bills is one pro- viding for a revision of Article 14 of the American Constitution so that citizenship may be denied Japanese children born in America [a denial which the Japanese Consuls are always anxious to encourage by pressing Japanese parents to register their children at the Consulate. This Bil was pessed by the Legislature with ease, but its passage through the State Legislature does not cause immediate Anxiety to the Japanese, as it remains to be seen whether the subject will be taken up by the American Con- gress. What affects the actual inter. ests of the Japanese residents in that State is the enactment and enforce- ment of a law from the 1st instant prohibiting the publication in the Stare of books and journals printed in fore cign languages, partly as a means of preventing the spread of Bolshevik ideas, and partly with a view to 25- celerating the Americanisation aliens.
