American cotton prices have been largely influenced by fluctuations in the American exchange and whilst business has been more general there is little notable change at the close from rates ruling a week ago. Re- ports as to progress of preparations for the new crop are unfavourable,On but although such a poor start can be easily made up later on, given beneficial conditions, there has been some accession of strength to the MOTC. distant positions, and futures generally are 6rm. The advance in sterling exchange had a strengthening effect in New York which however leaves prices at Liverpool practically unchanged. Egyptian cotton has recovered from the acute depression recently experi- enced, caused, it is generally believed. through over-speculation, and the forced liquidation which took place appears to have been con-1 cluded satisfactorily. the tone being considerably stronger. In Hongkong 50 cents sub.. the

cloth sectiona the undercurrent of enquiry is still of some weight, and although the business done again shews a con- siderable shrinkage from that of past recent weeks. It continues to be of suficient bulk to keep delivery mov. ing stadily forward. For China, trade has been comparatively small and enquiry for India is notably quieter. The demand for South - America has also fallen "off but the smaller Far Eastern mark- ts have sup plied some enquiry and business has been put through för Singapore and Java. The Home Trade section is quieter, only lots for pressing require. ments being booked. That is in fact the disposition of buyers generally; no willingness being shewn to hook far ahead. but there is still a ready sale for stacks or goods for early delivery..! Prices are practically unchanged, the tendency remaining upwards. The feature of notable interest in the week's trading has been the advance in the American exchange.
The effect
this is of course to reduce the price of commodities here; and whilst, owing to the stronger tone at New York, cotton is practically unchanged in the pre sent instance, the advance has been immediately felt in the silver market, spot silver falling 63d on the 5th inst., which probably constitutes a record. This has been immediately reflected in the exchange rates of the silver currency outlets which are reduced appreciably. The advance in sterling exchange, due to the decision to renay Government loans and our improving trade balance with the United States, seems likely to be continued.
