HIGH-GRADE STEEL.

Continued from Page 3.)

(2) The country that is able to produce high-grade steel at roughly, the cost of ordinary steel will beneft by an immensely increased output. and will be able, because of superior methods, to compete on favourable terms with Great Britain, America, and other countries.

· A CHEAPER PRODUCT. At a moment when the whole work is in need of steel of every sort, the cheapening of the material itself in its highest grade and a reduction in the amount of labour.required" to produce it is a factor of capital im- portance in the general work of reconstruction.

The engineers claim that they have succeeded in obtaining these results Their professional equip ment makes it doubtful whether they could have been deceived in their estimate of the results attained. The claim is very different from those that - are often advanced in such subjects as medicine, where so much depends on interpretation. "Here there is the raw materiä), crude iron; there is the process, and there is the result The crude tron can be analysed, with, all its impurities, and the result ing steel can and has been equally analysed. Consequently the "issue" would appear to be either that an enormous advance, constituting a revolution in the steel industry, has been achieved, or that a futile attempt has been made, with no obvious end in view to mislead the experts and the public.

For those technically interested it.. is possible to add certain further details. Among the steels that the laventors claim to be able to produce are the following --

Carbon steel: 2 per cent. nickel steel; 5 per cent. nickel steel; carbon chrome steel; chrome nickel steel. magnet tungsten steel; apring steel: silico-manganese steel; chrome steel up to 14 per cent content; nickel steel up to 36 per cent. content (e.g lavar type);"tungsten-chrome-nickel steel; tungsten-chrome vanadium. steel; 12 per cert, manganese steel (Hadfield type); die steels, auperior to British-made steels.

As far as raw material is concerned,. hematite Iron, called "refining bema... tite," containing 0.04 phosphorus and 0.05 sulphur, is the most suitable

A point that has to be borne in mind is that while the electric process for producing pure steel suitable for the preparation of high-grade steel is. excellent, it requires an enormONS EX- penditure of energy and labour, and is consequently extremely costly. The Bessemer process, on the other hand, while relatively cheap, has

inevitable impurities. As regards appliance, labour, and yield, all that is required from the standpoint of in- stallation is an ordinary Bessemer fur- nace. The result is a higher output, with a large reduction of labour, with great ease of running, and per- fect quality of product. To give an Hlustration, the inventors claim that. two cupolas and three converters of 1-ton capacity will produce forty to hours working day. fifty tons of alloy steela per eight

The following comparative details, Interesting only as being comparative and not as a basis of real values, will show at a glance the merits of the new process, as claimed by its inventors, as contrasted with the electric and the Martin Siemens-pro- ceeses →→→→

As regards installation plant, the cost of the new process is slightly less than the Martin Siemens method and much cheaper than the eléctric systemp. As regards labour, one shift of workmen is sufficient, instead of three. The amount of fuel required "ls about half, or rather less than balf of that used in the Martin Sie- mens process, and less than one- sixth of that needed by the electrical (cold furnace) system. Running cost is also considerably lower. The cost price per 100 kilos of liquid steel according to the inventora figures, works out at an average of 235 francs for crucible steel, 140 francs by the electrical process, at 141 fraces by the Martin Siemens process, and at 112 francs. by the new method, these prices being based on the pre-war cost Of labour and material.

The inventors Have decided not to patent their method, but to operate
