MISS BRADT'S BANKRUPTON.
Miss Mary Brady, the Manchester girl who is serving a sentence of 12 months' imprisonment for defraud ing her employers of large sums of money, was examined in the Bank. ruptcy Court on a statement of affairs disclosing, gross liabilities of £13,000, of which,£11,000 was dus to unsecured creditors, and assets amounting to £7,000. Her career of extravagance began in 1915 and continued until her arrest a few months ago.
Her father was in the Royal Irish Constabulary, and, according to Miss Brady's evidence, was comfortably off, although out wealthy. In her -early career in Manchester she was a typist and clerk at a music hall. She entered the office of a shipping firm five years ago, and eventually became bookeeper to the firm at a salary of £4 week. Miss Brady 'herself was responsible for a story that in 1911, when she became of age, she inherited the income from £5,000 under her grandmother's wil and that she received the capital sum in 1915. In that way the had explained her abilty to live at the Midland Hotel.

Miss Brady's original explanation of the circumstances in which the became bankrupt was that from the time she went to the, Midland Hotel she began to live extravagantly, spending a large amount of money on dress, jewellery, and entertain- ments, and, in 12 months' time, had practically exhausted the £5,000. She could not bring herself to stop her extravagances, and in order to meet her expenditure she took money from her employers. She admitted that the grandmother's legacy was an invention. High: (March 21) of Mrs. Wiley, wife. of Mr. Wiley, of Messrs. Dickinson; Co. The exact cause of her death. is at present under investigation.
It appears that the unfortunate lady went to take a bath at 11 p.m. in a bath which was supplied with hot water from a geyser, ber husband being in the house at the time.
Mr. Wiley, not seeing his wife for rather longer than he expected and bearing no noise from the bathroom went to the door and obtaining no response to his calls burst the door open and found his wife dead in the bath, which was full to overflowing with scalding hot water. His wife was submerged up to her nose and was apparently dead. Mr. Wiley immediately pulled his wife out of the bath, suffering gevere scalda in doing so, but she was found to be quite dead.
It would appear that the “un- fortunate lady left the hot water from the geyser flowing and fainted
