There is no doubt but that there will be a tank steamer shortage in view of the enormous requirements of 1920 for fuel oil. The Shipping Board has estimated that the Govern- ment needs will be 66,000,000 barrels of fuel oil during 1920. Great Bri- tain is to require a great tonnage of cil, also, as the principal lines have embraced a fuel oil burning pro gramme for their ships. Owing to the urgency of the situation, the Shipping Board has reinstated about 30,000 deadweight tons of tanker contracts that were suspended, and is making other plans to off-set an" anticipated million-ton tanker short- age.
It is also stated that the Atlantic, Gulf, and West Indies Steamship Lines, which recently placed a con- tract with four American shipyards for eight tank steamers has ordered two more tankers. The Sun Shipbuild-
