CUNARD LINE AND PLYMOUTH.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT RE LINES DECISION.

An announcement was made in "The Journal of Commerce store time ago on the authority of the Press Association's Plymouth corres potdent that the Canard Line were abandoning Flymouth as a port of call for their three large fidèra, 'Aquitania, Mauretania and Imperator, and they would call only at Cherbourg and Southampten.

The Cunard Line officially stated to a representative of "The Spuinal of Commerce that the statement that the company had dropped Ely- mouth as a port of coal was incorrect. although for the time being these three steamers would not call there. Like other places, Plymouth has suffered from the effects of the war, and is not in a position, to deal with the traffic which necessarily comes into the part by these big steamers

However, when Ply aiduth was.com. mercially ready to cope with the tramc and the facilities were more normal, then thecompany wouldrerise the ques tlon of these three steamers résutning their calf there. In the meantime the other passenger ships of the line which may be engaged on the New York and English Channel service will call at Plymouth as hitherto, Within tre next few week the Great Western Railway Company willhive. two more passenger tenders, which are at present reconditioning after war service, at their disposa), and this will materially increase the facilities offered for the disembarka tion of passengers at Plymouth.

SELECTION OF PORT OF CALI

The statement that the Cunard Biners Mauretania. Aquitania, and the ex-German liner Imperator are to cease calling at Plymouth, and that the New Zealand Steamship Company's vessels have chosen Southampton as their port of call instead of Plymouth, has caused con siderable interest in traffic circles.

Seen by a Press Association representative an official at the Great Wastern Railway (Paddington) Station said that they had heard nothing officially regarding the matter, and all they knew was what they had learned from published statements.

"If there is any truth in the state- ment," be continued. "It is due to the fact that the dock accommodation at Southampton is much more ample. Large vessels can be taken righristo

Plymouth the steamers have to be unloaded at sea, and the passengers, maila &c., taken to the Milibay. Dock by tender, or small steamships pro- for the purpose. vided by the Great Western Railway

The Imperator for instance, a

few weeks ago was bound for Plymouth but she experienced rough weather and shortage of coal, and if was decided that she should be taken to Southampton. Whether travelling would be expedited by 19th March at 1 p..preferring Southampton to Plymabath

It is difficult to say. When you compare the docking of a huge vessel to the time taken up by the tenders between the vessel and the dock there might not be much difference. Up to now Plymouth has been select- ed as being the nearest port, it being generally considered that London

The official added that even if the steamship companies in question had come to the decision, to avoid. Piy mouth in future the effect financially on the Great Western Railway Com pany would not be great.

As to the question of lack of accommodation for passengers at tion would largely depend on any Plymouth an increase in this, direc- steps that might be taken for the development of the docks. The company are at present short "óf tenders, these loaned to the Govern- ment not having been yet retured.
