CACTI ON THE MOON.
PROFESSOR'S DISOVERY,
"BIG BERTHA" THEORY.
Is the moon a mere lifeless ball, a- mere instrument with no personality of its own, good only for guiding German air raiders to drop in- cendiary bombs in the gardens of Greenwich Observatory, or has it some real life of its own?
Sir Frank Dyson, the Astronomer Royal, has his doubts about the “ supposed discovery by Professor Pickering of vegetation on the moon. "I know him," Sir Frank, told an Evening Standard representative. "He has a splendid atmosphere for his work in the West Indies; he works hard; he comes of a talented family; one of his brothers is at the head of one of best observatories in the world, but this 'discovery' ai of plants, like sagebrush and casti on ́ the moon, is highly speculative."
-
Professor Pickering believes that the "craters "on the moon, are formed by volcances, whose, eruption has left some water in these hollows in the forms of snow or hoar frist, and be maintains that during the lunar day of 15 days the floor of these hollows gradually darkens, a change of colour which can only be accounted for by the growth of vegetation.
The Professor admits that the wonderful symmetry of these circular craters suggests that they are made by falling meteers rather than by volcanoes. In fact, they exactly re- semble the hollows made by bombs- (dropped by aeroplanes, as was strik. ingly apparent in the latest and best photograph of the moon, courteously produced by the Astronomer Royal, If this is so, the bottom of Professor Pickering's argument is knocked out
at once.
Again, Professor Pickering asserts that "observations made at Green- wich during occultations of the moon show that a tenuous atmosphere actually exists on the surface of the moon." To this assertion Sir Frank Dyson demura. It is going too far to say that Greenwich ever demon- strated this.
To the argument that sagebrush and cacti would not be likely to be created, if there were no animals to eat them, Sir Frank Dyson attaches little weight.
"The conclusion of the whole matter is," he said, "that Professor Fickering has three times called attention to his theories" (pointing to the volumes on his table), in 1915, 1917, 1919, and yet up astrono- mers have thought it worth while to devote attention to them."
As for Professer Godddard's idea

MODERN WOMEN.
AN EXTRAORDINARY ATTACK.
Mr. J. Swinburne, a relative of the famous poet, startled a meeting of the London Musical Union by an edraordinary, attack.op women.
The war," he declared, was mere-- ly a great sex advertisment Women wore comic opera uniforms. The woman war worker wore breeches of some kind whenever possible, and cursed, smoked, swore, talked slang and became as good an imitation of a lower type of man as she could." Another complaint that Mr. Swinburne has against women is that she lacks the mechanical faulty. 'How many women in the whole of England," he asked, "have taken their sewing machines to pieces to understand how they work. Their complete lack of any kind of mechanical understanding is shown in the small things of daily life. A woman cannot cut a pencil She dabs her pen to the bottom of the ink pot, and when one nib retires. into the holder she puts another in on top of it. She thinks water boil- ing violently is much hotter than water simmering. If a paring chisel is left within her reach she uses, it- to break boxes open. All machinery is to her queer stuff that men under-- stand."
As for music, erroneously supposed ta, be women's special sphere; There had never been a woman critie. Na woman has brought out a system of harmony: no woman has made a name as a teacher of composition or even of pjato or fiddle playing-There has never been an eminent woman, organist. No musical instrument has been invented by a woman. Every day a million. women waste some million hours
