Details of the summary expulsion of three naturalised-Germans from New Guinea by returned soldiers at Port Moresby, supported by the general public; were brought to Brisbane with the arrival of the "Burns, Philp steamer "Marsina at Pinkenba yesterday, afternoon, reports the "Brisbane Courier.`of. January 9: The passengers on board” included a number of returned men, all of whom took part in the icove- ment, while in the steerage were the three men who had been compelled to leave.
From the combined accounts of the disturbance it appears that these Germans, each of whom were well known in the island, and who were deported for internment during the way, boarded the Marsina at Sydney to return to New Guinea, under in- structions, it was reported, from the Defence Department. The steamer reached Port Moresby on December 30, but they were not allowed asboro until two days later. When it her came known that the Germans were to be landed general disapproval was expressed, and a movement was instituted by the returned soldiers to affect their deportation. The more- Iment received the spontaneous back. ing of practically every member of the community, and work through- out the town was suspended to watch the trend of events, The out- ceme of several hastily arranged

Your to gain their object by consti- tutional means, and to that end a deputation of soldiers and members of the public waited upon the Acting Administrator (Mr. Champion) with the request that the Germans should be immediately returned on board: the Marsina. Mr. Champion express. ed his sympathy with the request of the deputation but explained that he was powerless to accede to it owing to the fact that the Germans had been sent at the orders of the Defence Department. He further pointed out that they were naturalised subjects, and he could do nothing until they were denaturalised.
AN ESCAPE AND A CAPTURE-
Before withdrawing several mem- ters of the deputation made it clear that the strong feeling of both the returned soldiers and general public was such that. If the Germans re- mained in New Guinea the deputation would not be responsible for what might happen.
Mr. Champion, it was stated, replied that he was telegraphing to the Defence authorities in Melbourne asking that measures should be taken to prevent German internees return- ing to the country. There had been no previous notification of their com- ing, and, he understood, à further number had been booked by the Morinda. He had questioned, the Germans concerning their prospect of finding employment, and "they. had none. One of them owned a little property, but their capital was not more than a few pounds.
In the meantime the Germans had come ashore. The leaders of the deputation then made their way to the Customs House, where a large crowd had gathered, to announce the result of their conference with the Acting Administrator. The an nouncement that the Government authorities could not order, the return of the Germans was received with marked disapproval. In answer to the question by a returned soldier.
Do we want Huns in New Guinea ?" there was a stentorian and unani- mous "No." The "Marsina" was listed to sail in half an hour. The soldier pickets who had been detailed to watch the movements of the Germans reported the whereabouts of two of them, and they were given half an hour in which to get back to the steamer. They were on board in a few minutes, and a- guard was placed at the wharf to... prevent their disembarking. again. A large crowd, with the returned soldiers in the vad, started out to search the town for the third man, who was shortly afterwards located by one of the scouts making in the direction of the Administrator's office. The crowd af önce set off jn: in pursuit, but the fugitive was feet of foot, and dashing through the building made for the bush About a mile away he was discovered hid ing in an old hut. The soldiers. captured him, and he was escorted back to the steamer by a guard of eight men, practically the entire population, of Port Moresby bringing up the rear. He was placed on board the Marsina, which moved ́out, bound for Australia, to the ac-- companiment of vociferous cheering. (Continued on Page 9.)
