(Continued from page 2) knowledge, but like Michelet's His- tery of France, it was not always written in a style in which truth could be told-laughter-so that it was difficult to compute the amount of inaccurate knowledge, unaltested. assertion, extravagant hypothesis, and sloppy thinking put into circula-) tion every day of the year. He was comped reluctantly to believe that unlesssome serious efforts were made to impart a lie mare, rigour and exactitude in the modes of thought and expression employed in the Press, a good deal of injury would be done to the intelletual sincerity of the nation.
Over and over again. one became conscious that truth had become almost a secondary considera- tion in the conduct of a newspaper.
VIRTUES OF A HEADLINE. Unfortunately the stimulus sup plied by the daily Press, so far from helping them to resist the fog, only increased its density. Let them not, however, exaggerate the case against the Press. Occasion- ally a gleam of scientific humility shone eveu in a headline. Recently he was delighted with the encourag ing announcement Milk may be cheaper: "not an imperative "Milk must be cheaper ": not an assertion of fact, "Milk might be cheaper "i not a confident prediction, "MIR will be cheaper "; not a truism, "Liberalism means cheap milk "- The paradox (laughter)-not a Government desires cheap milk!" but a simple dubitative subjunctive, "Milk may be cheaper." (Laughter.) So it might so it might not. In either event the newspaper stood to win, and smiled serenely with the triple crown of modesty, prudence and truth. (Laughter) The best corrective to wild, vague talk of an explosive kind! was a little cool, disinterested critic. jam, and the spread of that intel lectual atmosphere which, for want of a better word, we called scientific. War was almost always the result of ignorance in a very high state Wars arose out of of culture. ignorance. were sustained by igter- ance, and followed by ignorance. Most of the intellectual work of the world proceeded from the class which class, the middle attached value to culture. (Hear, hear.) But this class was now crip.

A GOOD STORY.

Mr. Fisher, in reply, told a good story against himself. Like every- body else, he said, he had had his house sold over his head, and had migrated to a new part of London. He sent his servant to order a morn- ing paper, and when the servant gave his name, the vendor said: "What! hira as wants to stop the morning delivery; a fat lot he wants with newspapers." (Laughter.)
