And this is wherein the coloured musicians-shining, beam- ng, gesticulating, and swaying to fand fro as if intoxicated with their own sounds-do succeed. Their means to this success are, pace the conventional musician, interesting. It is, to start with, such thoroughly. spontaneous music you can see, as they perform how they love it, and enjoyment is infectious.
FRENZIED ENJOYMENT.
Their enjoyment easily takes a frenzied turn, and that is rare enough: sensation for the civilised breast.. At the height of one of their "rage" the stage offers a wild scene of swaying figures and convulsed coun......... tenances. The percussion beats out the characteristic' syncopated dance rhythm. Over-civilised music is apt to grow bloodless as it loses touch with primitive enjoyment in dence and song, and has need to return for sed vitality to the brutality of primitive rhythm and the pathos of primitive Song. Half a century ago the triangle in Liszt's piano concerto scandalised the musical world. It is good to have scandals in the musical world: and the beaming black drum- mer "Buddie," with his dionysiac piece, "The Quintessence of Jazz" may quite conceivably leave his mark on our serious composers."
