SHANGHAI Feb. 1. Over 10,000 students, representing 44 schools, assembled at the Tin Mun Gate, Peking, on the snowy morning of the 31st ult. They shouted re- peatedly "for help to be given to the Tientsin students.
The Police and Military authorities asked the Government to give instruc- tions to deal with the students. The Government told them to keep an eye on the students and to allow no dis- turbances.
The Cabinet has instructed General Pau Kwai Hing to proceed to Herbin and to take all defensive measures he may think necessary..
Över 5,000 persons, representing 94 public bodies, held a mass meeting at Shanghai. They unanimously re- solved to protest against direct rego- tiation with Japan regarding Shantung: bet favoured the Foochow case being. settled in accordance with the arrange- ments as suggested in Peking and Shanghai. After the meeting they marched in rank and "inspected " Japanese goods in the shops.

A Chinese was this morning charged before Mr. Wood with the theft from the Taikoo Docks, of 28 lbs of, lead, and 134 lbs of brass wire. He said it was given him by another man, to carry. A Chinese Watchman said that when the defendant saw him he ran away. He gave chase and caught the de fendant on the seafront. The defendant threw the bag containing the stolen things into the water. Ha took the defendant to the station, and later fished the bag out of the water, by means of a boat hook. Sentence of six weeks' hard labour was passed.
